Cheapo supermarket LIDL are selling a 28 yr old single malt at £29.99. I know nothing about whisky but wanted a decent bottle for visitors at Christmas. Its not a brand anybody else carries but will I am sure have been properley sourced. Anyone have an opinion, it seems great value, but as I only want one bottle should I stick to a recognised brand?

This may, or may not, help you.

Lidl do an Irish Whiskey, that - to me - indeterminable from Jamesons (and I've been a Jamesons imbiber for 10+ years) that is four quid less than the original.

Coolley Distillary make most of the "funny brands", Micks Favourite Tipple etc which pop up in Lidl/Aldi and throughout the rest of Europe in various supermarkets.when they set out to take on Diagio, they decided to make top quality products rather than low end products so much so that Diagio has had to up the quality of many of its products and produce some new ones to keep up with them.Coolley consistantly win taste competitions around the world.

Thanks for the info. I am going to get a bottle. Wont be able to give much feedback though as I'm not really a drinker.

Has anyone tried the 18yr old single malt that Aldi are currently selling for 20 quid a pop? Is it any good, bearing in mind I prefer a Speyside malt to anything else?

I can't answer your question but a friend of mine also likes a Speyside and he's been told (by a joint friend and Whisky fancier) that the Tesco own Speyside usually comes from a good distillery and apparently he's yet to be disappointed.

It might be Tesco premium thinking about it - not sure if such a thing exists, either way it's a good saving on some brands.

I've sampled a Speyside from Tesco a little while ago. From memory, it was pretty darned good.

Sainsburys Speyside is pretty good too. £15 a bottle at the mo.
