Hi all,

I am taking Mrs H to London this weekend to go to the theatre (Whyndhams) and would very much appreciate any thoughts on a nice place to eat after the performance on Saturday (its an early show so 8pm ish for food) within walking distance of the theatre (WC2H 0DA).

Living on the opposite side of the country its not somewhere we go (last time was a couple of years ago for a similar event) so I have no idea where would be appropriate. I'm not after anywhere flash or expensive, just somewhere that will do a decent plate of food and a glass of wine so I can get a table booked.

Thanking you in advance,

Matt

Sophies Steakhouse, Covent Garden

Incredible (but a bit pricey)

You're right next to covent garden and Leicester square there. And Chinatown. And everywhere else...

Nice idea - Something other than a steak menu would be appreciated by Mrs H I think :-)

It could be the moon to me - I live next to Wales & am originally from Cornwall.

Agreed, it is great.

Le Garrick, nearby, is just as good, if not better..and lighter on the pocket. The steaks are superb, and it's a bit more of an intimate enviroment. smile

If you don't mind a drink at the bar while you wait, try Wahaca. Cheap (for central London) and cheerful and pretty decent Mexican. Big, pleasant dining room.

Not sure if it's still there but I had a nice meal in an Italian restaurant close to Charing X station, on the road opposite Leicester Square station towards Covent Garden.
Or there's the trusted Garfunkels in Leicester Square. The salad bar alone may be enough before a show.

Looks interesting... sounds a bit... err.. lively..!?? "Wahaca Covent Garden collides the heat of the Mexican market with all the coolness of London's trendy West End, in an explosion of colour, texture and noise. Enjoy the funky music and lively surroundings in our bar while you wait to be seated."

Haha! Yeah, it is a bit lively, but not packed with any particular type so it's tolerable. And the room is pretty big. Worth a go for cheapish and decent food and booze without resorting to TGI Friday hell.

Try Kettners. It's owned by the Pizza Express group and is much smarter. There's a champagne bar there too.

Joe Allen on Exeter Street is excellent for pre/post theatre food.

Has a theatre theme and is knwon for feeding actors/actresses from the local shows over the years. Don't be surprised if you're on a table next to some of the cast of the show you're about to see.

Sensible prices as well!

Great food, good atmosphere - and not dressy. I bloody love the place!
