Hi I want somthing simple and easy I was thinking of some hot smoked salmon and maybe some prawns. This doesn't seem very exciting, any bright ideas?

Using your hot smoked salmon idea, I'd serve it with a sweet, yet sour sauce made from say orange, soy, ginger, honey, sesame and a little chili.

Reduce it so the consistency is quite thick, then glaze the salmon in it. Use the remaining sauce to dress your accompanying salad.

I have a number of family and friends coming over who don't eat anything fish based and wondered if anyone had any ideas on a starter that is not prawn/salmon/white bait based? Best I can come up with is some form of soup but wifey thinks this will be too heavy a starter given the main course and dessert. So any light, non fished based starters spring to mind?

Chicken livers? or how about a hot salad with black pudding and poached egg.

If you want to keep it simple pate or a terrine (persillade terrine with some pickled gherkins is delicious)
I would do this but I will have a non meat eater guest.

How about a fried mozzarella? Crispy on the outside and liquid in the middle. Needs to be a thickish piece.
Easy to do and very tasty

With our work christmas meal they're doing Garlic Mushrooms in breadcrumbs.. Something along those lines anyway.

Going for a mushroom and blue cheese filled spinach roulade here. Spotted in an asda magazine redfaceops: and thought it would make a simple, but interesting, light alternative to the seafood starters I usually do.
