Decided a while back to get myself a new set of knives, as the ones I have are a bit old and worn, and are a mix of different types. I'm not a knife snob, but as I'm getting into cooking more and more it seemed a logical step to replace them with something a little better.
Today they arrived. A £45 block set of five James Martin Stellar knives, with a lifetime guarantee. Black wooden block with a paring knife, utility knife, chef's knife, carving knife and bread knife... and I also bought a £23 set of three different-sized Santoku knives, the same brand. Not high-end knives like Globals, but then not the cheapest either!

First impressions are that the quality seems very good, and the knives are well balanced and feel good in the hand. Very pleased, and keen to try them out tonight! No idea what to cook though

They look good.
I have a Richardson block of knives but they are all serrated so only use them for certain things.
For a cooks knife I have one from Ikea which has been fine.
On a related topic has anyone else heard of a superstition that you arent supposed to buy knives for someone else as its bad luck? I was going to get some for the o/h but she wouldnt let me because of this

I have heard that... it probably originated in someone not liking the knife they'd been given and using it to stab the person who gave it to them!
I heard about that knife bad luck thing. The saying is that if you buy a knife for someone it could sever the relationship. Traditionally you would give the person that bought them for you a coin in exchange to stop the bad vibe. this is what I did when I got knives for wedding presents. some people can be very superstitious.

Always held that. Never give a blade as a gift - BUT - the solution is that the recipient must 'buy' the blade, by giving you a piece of silver as the purchase price, in practice, any small coin will suffice. Everyone happy!
