Help!

I'm planning a - ahem - 'special dinner' on Saturday, and am intending to rip off Cactussed's idea of foie gras on brioche with Sauternes jelly as a starter.

Only one problem... I can't find foie gras anywhere. Canned will do.

I don't want to schlep up to London if I can avoid it, and mail order is out since it might not get here in time.

Anyone know any delis etc in Surrey which definately stock it?

You could try excellar in Ashtead. Worth a phone call anyway. Mainly a wine shop, but they often have that sort of stuff in the shop...

for that matter, try palmers while you're at it!

good luck!

Good call!

I hadn't thought of it as it's a bit out of my way. However I could get the wines in there too... scratchchin

The bloke who runs that really knows his stuff, and I've had some fantastic off-piste recommendations from him.

Update:

Got some duck foie gras from 'ex cellar' in Lower Ashtead. Apparently it's a stock item. lick Also some cheeky wines.

Thus far the menu's panning out as:

- Foie gras on toasted brioche with Sauternes jelly (Montbazillac accompanying)
- Fillet steak with Dauphinoise potatoes (Chateauneuf-du-Pape accompanying)
- Dark chocolate mousse with shortbread (remainder of the Sauternes accompanying)

Any comments on the food / wine pairings? I'm not sure about the Montbazillac given the Sauternes jelly and wonder if a Viogner / Torrontes / something else might be more appropriate.

C&C all welcome. thumbup

Not sure where you are in Surrey (you're sorted now anyway) but there's a place in Haslemere and in Milford that stock....

I bought some in Waitrose a little while back. Not sure if they still do it. Worth a visit?

Portions will be small, but exquisite.

Don't want to overstuff the poor chap ;-)

I'd bin the brioche in favour of thinly sliced and toasted honey & malt baguette (or similar), otherwise it gets far too sweet/rich for me.

Fellow foodies, I'm afraid that a very grave sin has been committed: dinner date brought supermarket wine.

I'd previously mentioned that foie gras would be on the menu. So not everyone knows what goes with that, but google / any good wine merchant does - if one can be bothered to ask, I think.

So what now?

Allow another chance? Or ditch for Crimes Against Gastronomy?

You could look upon him as a project. Someone with which to explore and push both your personal boundaries to their very limits. Pol Roger & Chippy. Chassagne Montrachet & Burger king. Foie Gras & Fosters. The world is your lobster.

Or you could tell him never to darken your door again. wink

LOL.

The latter, I think.

I'm not a food/wine snob by any means - I'd count fish and chips washed down with a can of Diamond White on Swanage seafront as one of my most memorable meals.

However since it isn't as though he didn't know what we'd be having, I'd have expected more of an effort.
