So, it's my birthday in March and Mrs 645 is thinking of a hotel/restaurant weekend break as a potential present. She did suggest the Manoir but I fancy something near the coast. I know of Gidlea (sp) park but any other recommendations? Doesn't have to be super expensive, just a nice place to stay and a good restaurant either attached or within staggering distance.

Thanks

Roger

The hotel at Watergate Bay in Cornwall (just outside of Newquay) is very nice and is next door to Jamie Oliver's Fifteen restaurant. I know Jamie sometimes comes in for a bit of a kicking on here but we thought the food, service and location at Fifteen were excellent (much better value at the Cornwall one than London) and it was a very relaxing experience.

We went there in the week of my 30th birthday which also included a trip to the Fat Duck and Nathan Outlaw's and the experience was every bit on a par with those two, albiet that all three were very different.

ETA - appreciate that Newquay isn't on the south coast but it is on the coast and is in the south (west)!

The Fish House in Chilgrove (Sussex) is nice. Book a Jacuzzi room too.

My suggestion depends upon how far you consider the South Coast to extend... One of my favourite places is Tresanton in St Mawes:

Another option - although with attached accommodation - might be Hix at Lyme Regis.

Don't know about the accommodation, but if it's anything like the food they serve, you won't be disappointed! yum

A second vote for this, we stayed there, accomodation and breakfast both superb. In addition, is in the centre of Emsworth so some good pubs around as well!

Bailiffscourt at Climping (near Littlehampton) is fabulous. Every room is individual, dining is excellent, and there's a wonderful spa. Peacocks roam the grounds, which are secluded and quiet.

Gidleigh Park isn't really on the coast (but its very good) and has a river in the grounds so you get water!

Gary Rhodes place (Rhodes South) is part of a hotel in Christchurch - not stayed in the hotel but the food it pretty good and has a good view over the harbour.

Burgh Island.

I was married there, and it doesn't disappoint.

Just be prepared to get your wallet out.

Rhodes not there anymore, it's now http://www.thejetty.co.uk/

Still very, very good without Rhodes.
