Hi, planning ahead for Valentines day (which will be celebrated a weekend earlier because she's working) and am keen to go for a tasting menu experience.
Apart from the most famous i.e. Fat Duck, Manoir, Roux bros et al are there any perhaps more moderately priced but still enjoyable venues?
Ideally would have accommodation.

thanks in advance

I guess it depends where you want to go, Sat Bains in Nottingham is excellent and has very good rooms as well http://www.restaurantsatbains.com/

The Hambrough on the Isle of Wight is also excellent with fantastic accomodation overlooking the sea http://www.thehambrough.com/

Both of them have Michelin stars and are quite special.

L'enclume in the Lake District is very good. It is a bit out of the way but is definitely worth the journey.

We had a truly wonderful time at The Burlington at The Devonshire Arms. They do a superb tasting menu and Menu Prestige which ended up as thirteen courses. Service was perfect.

+1 for Sat Bains.

I'm booked into Hambleton Hall for my 40th which has had good reviews. Then of course there are lots of places in London.
Le Gavroche is good (2 star), no rooms but plenty of choice in town. Claridges, The Waterside Inn both have rooms and tasting menus.

Just be aware you've left it a bit late only 3 weekends. I normally book these type of places 3 months in advance to get what I want!

How about Purnell's. He also has a new venture - The Asquith.

Is it logical to assume the Asquith will be at the same price point as Purnells?

Best food I've ever eaten was on the tasting menu here: http://www.thesportsmanseasalter.co.uk/

Having been lucky enough to have eaten at The Fat Duck, Waterside Inn, Ramsey's, Rick Stein, Daniel Clifford, John Campbell etc I can fully recommend them all - however for something a little different & secluded I can also absolutely recommend the Chef's Table with Michael Wignall at Penny Hill Park :-

Being right in the kitchens with the Michelin chefs and the personalised menu really is good fun smile

Tasting menu or a la carte?

Its just that last time I went they didn't do the tasting menu around the weekend because its so involved. Its a mid-week pre-booked only thing.

I always have the tasting menu where I can. There's nothing I won't eat, so I like the fact I don't know what's coming, and I know I won't dislike whatever it is! I'm going mid-week lunchtime, so it's no probs for this time... Looking forward to it!

Significant levels of envy here.

Phil Harris (the beardy chap who is often front-of-house and brother of chef Steve) won't hard-sell any wine choices on you, but they have some excellent value bin ends from time to time and he has a sound understanding of what will go nicely with the various courses.

How about http://www.midsummerhouse.co.uk/? I think you're local-ish to me, so that's not too far to travel, lots of good options for accomodation in Cambridge also! 2 Stars.

I guess you might get a booking at such short notice...!

Had tasting menu at Turners, Harborne,Brum and Purnell's. Both excellent and highly recommended. Booked to go to the Walnut Tree Abergavenny. They have 2 lovely cottages at he back of the restaurant. £160 per night for 2 people. Fischers at Baslow Hall also v good. Not had tasting menu at Simspons Brum, but the a la carte was excellent.
