Been three times in last twelve months. First time thought it was disappointingly average. Gave it a second chance some months later - still not impressed. Went again last week & no better. Okish food, very average service. NOT worth the final bill. Not in the same league as many other restaurants in that price bracket - or indeed many below it. Anyone else been recently?

Like his Chippy right on harbour though.

It's not been great for a long time. They now try to fit too many people in and there is less attention to detail.
I had a much better meal out at Paul Ainsworth's.

I've not tried there. Is that another Stein place?

Yep. If you walk up the hill to the right of the Seaford Restaurant you will find it.

We tried to go there from Devon a few years back. Got completely lost and ended up going home. Once I got back to civilisation, an internet connection in those days, found out we probably couldn't get a seat anyhow.

He's a great tv chef, like Jamie is, but I doubt he is that good a cook.

Think of the great car drivers, like Senna, or the great writers like Russell Bulgin or David Vivian or LJK Setright .. horses for courses pardon the pun. One could write, one could drive.

Actually, I think the one tv chef who might actually provide a mind popping menu to enjoy whilst being on the tv is

Ainsley Harriet.

oops, sorry, I meant Gary Rhodes. He pays an inordinate attention to detail in his programs rather than being pukka-in-ya-face-yo-this-is-fast-camera-pan.

Anyone been to a Gary Rhodes "cafe" and how did it compare?

Andy

I've been a couple of times (stayed there also). I thought it was lovely.

I've eaten at St Petroc’s Bistro and that was good too.

Went there years ago a couple of times. It was pretty good then but at that time there wasn't as much competition as there is now.

It may be telling that AFAIK his restaurant has never achieved a Michelin star, although his Cafe is on this year's Michelin "Good food at at moderate prices" list, so I'd be inclined to go to their if I was in Padstow again.

If you're going to be in Cornwall anyway you could always try Nathan Outlaw's restaurant in Rock. http://www.nathan-outlaw.com/

I beleive the thinking behind the restaurant is to focus on the produce rather than the presentation. (michelin standard)

Yes, that's fair comment. I would be surprised if the fish in any of Stein's places is anything other than top notch and I doubt he feels the need to 'tart it up' in order to be awarded a star. Especially as the place is pretty expensive anyway and always fully booked.

I suppose these days, being a TV chef is as good as having a star, in business terms.

Also a lot of good Chefs do not want or wish to get a Michelin Star because of all the pretence that goes with it.

With all things fish/marisco they are always better when presented in a simple fashion.

Yep. Agreed - although service there took a dip when he bought it from prev owners not so long ago (having been chef there for a while prior to that). Closed for renovations currently.

Steins Cafe great different approach obviously and cheaper but great vibe and excellent food. Steins Bistro value too - wouldn't travel to eat there though.

THAT was one of the main let downs. The fish may be top notch/local/fresh but what they did with it wasn't that good. Dry/overcooked/undercooked & ordinary were the comments round our table.

Went to Steins fish & chip place on the harbour front a few weeks ago.

Its tiny and was packed so we had to que outside. The service was st (all foreign) and you didnt have room to swing a cat.

To be fair the fish wand chips were good and we had the winter deal of cod and chips, bread and butter and a pot of tea for £7.

The £8 just for fish and chips they charge in the summer would be expensive for what you get.

Never been to the Seafood Restaurant and I don't think I'll bother. Went to St Petroc's last year though and had an amazing steak at a good price. Good service too.

I love the Italian overlooking the harbour, vry reasonable priced, excellent service and the food is mostly very good.

Stein's chippy is a joke, you cant near it for the jolly hockey sticks anyway.

We looked at the prices thinking to book and decided no amount of cooking was worth that with a good bit of fish. Went else where.
