A friend recently lent me one of his cars for a good while.

I'd like to buy him a nice whisky as I know he's a big drinker of the stuff, but don't just want to plump for a £10 bottle of Bells.

Any recommendations? <£100

I asked this here and got some very good advice, ended up going with this suggestion http://www.thedrinkshop.com/products/nlpdetail.php... didn't get it from this site so can't vouch for them though. I got it through the whisky Exchange who were very good to deal with but have sold out of the bottle. Mine was for my dads 60th and he is very into his whisky and liked it a whole lot.

Hope this helps.

Standby for the deluge of recommendations from ph!

Under £100 gets you some very very very very good whisky. Average bottle of malt is about £30, so you could get him 2 or 3 decent bottles or just go for something very special.

Any of the older 15 - 35 year old bottles of the following distilleries will prove very delightful:

33 year old macallan
Any >10 year old springbank
17 year old Glengoyne is an absolute cracker, ~£50
Any > 15 year old highland park
Any ardbeg, they're all lovely, but perhaps a little peaty for some.

Avoid laphroig or any of the other islay malts standfast ardbeg, unless you definitely know he likes that kind of thing.

I could dig up a whole load more, but trying to keep it gift orientated. If it was me, I'd buy the glengoyne, but then the distillery is just down the road and it's a very nice road.

Do you happen to know what kind of whisky he usually drinks?

That will help a lot, be an awful shame to buy a good bottlke to find out he doesn't like sherry, phenol etc etc...

Having said that, like the chap above says, I don't know anybody who doesn't like the Portwood Balvenie! It's an awesome dram, really top-notch stuff.

Nice present by the way, very thoughtful of you.

I'd go for Yamazaki's Suntory 12 year old whisky. The price is reasonable and well under buget, and I've never met a whisky drinker who wasn't impressed with such a characterful drink, especially at the price!

Ardbeg is great, but if your not into that kind of thing, it'll never get drunk....

Loch Fyne whisky shop do mail order and are well respected as being one of the best. Could always ask their advice - thought they were a really nice bunch when I was there earlier in the year.

I'd still buy the glengoyne though - there's no peat in it, just a lovely rounded whisky.

They have great terms and conditions as well;

"The normal LFW guarantee applies, if you’re not happy with it, send it back and Andy will finish it off for you."

I have to agree. I'm a Lagavulin chap rather than Ardbeg (but it would be rude to refuse if iffered) but it can be a very aquired taste. I have many whisky drinking friends who simply can't bear the stuff. Whatever you buy, should be a treat and should be drunk!

You could try a nice Glenkinchie. Fabulous whisky and from my experience loved by all.

Mortlach Flora & Fauna. About £50 a bottle.

Not the sort of thing you see on the supermarket shelves, which is a bonus.

May even be approved by Lefty!

I bought a bottle of 12 year Dalmore and a bottle of 10 y/o Talisker which I always rather like for £50 at Heathrow a couple of weeks ago. Both were 1 litre so I thought it was a rather good buy.....

Absolutely. Buy two cause it's gonna get real rare, real quick! I bought 6 recently, 8 in total on my shelf now wink

And, regarding Glenkinchie, it's OK but, IMHO, not a "good whisky". On my tasting scale, it's a 1/5, meaning "It's whisky so I'l drink it"...

Mortlach's an absolute stunner, although I've not had the pleasure of the flaura and fauna one, but heard good good things.

Agree about the Glenkinchie. It's my mum's local distillery, so I've been there a few times and drank my fair share. My dad liked the 25? year old (might have been older) we bought him for his 60th, but it's not a whisky to savour. Quite good for a starter or pre-dinner whisky though.

Thanks for the recommendations gents.

I've gone with 3 bottles of the Mortlach F&F for a nudge under £130. Going have 2 on the shelf for special occasions, and give him the 3rd with a couple of Monte Cristo No. 2's.

Advice much appreciated.
