Probably just showing off if I'm honest, but I thought I'd let you all know my wifes valentines present to me was a meal at THE River Cottage near Axminster.

In a word: stunning.

The whole experience just lovely, the four course meal amazing - my highlight was the pan fried Brill and also the Rhubarb Crumble - which I've never really liked but last night was stunning!

The format is sitting on 2 long tables so you're encouraged to chat to your neighbours - a much nicer way to enjoy your meal - we made some great new friends whom we'll be seeing again...

Some tasty kit in the car park too - a DB9 for example (and my M5 obviously).

Staff lovely and Sous chef a thoroughly nice chap.

I can thoroughly recommend it thumbup

I'll have to ask the wife as it's all paid for in avabcr (excluding wine).

I'll confer with her also in the food we had - I'll list out what I could remember now and fill in the blanks later - you eat from a fixed menu of which you dont get to see until the chef announces it - all very exciting and makes it more special.

Canepes: blue cheese and yoghurt thingy
Beetroot and something thingy
Home-made sausage with dip
Some sort of mixed seafood type scampi thing

1st course: cream of artichoke soup with cauliflower
2nd course: local Brill with watercress and mashed potato
3rd course: Topside beef, sliced parallel to sinew with boulangere potato and curly kale
Dessert, rhubarb custard...

Some truffles and coffee smile

Nomnomnommymcnom.

Incidentally, we sat by the fish dealer who drove the fish in only that afternoon - it had been swimming that morning...

My sister and myself gave my parents a weekend away at river cottage for their 50th wedding anniversary. One of the best presents ever apparently. I would have loved to have gone but now too far away.

OMG.

If there's one place I'd like to go, it would be there.
