Help I'm going to a Sushi restaurant on Friday.
My only Sushi experience up to now has been at a Bonhams auctioneers cocktail party, where I picked up what looked like a round licorice allsort experiment gone wrong. Horribly wrong it tasted like dolphin had tried it sucked it then spat it out, then the little red centre had been dipped in battery acid.

Can anyone help me out please? Are there any beginners tips?

I don't want to order something and hear everyone around me gasp in horror and excitement, as 3 people carry in a live eel.

Have a look at yosushis menu. It gives a description of what each thing is below its name.

Stick to sushi, avoid the sashimi then.
