Spent the last 3 years renovating my house. I am now in a position where i have a kitchen and dining room. We have friends round next weekend.
I am going to cook:

Indivdual beef wellingtons, roast spuds, roast carrots in corriander, suger snap peas.
Trio of deserts with a brandy snap basket filled with vanilla ice cream
english cheese selection
coffee
all with the right wine etc.

What can i do for a starter? Fish is not an option. Fench onion soup?

Reccomendations please

To go with that I think the starter needs to be fairly light.

What about a chicken liver salad?

Or cheat's starter such as Pate or a terrine that you can prep way in advance?

Or how about something such as fish cakes (I know you said no fish....)

SOmething completely different such as Jamie's fruit, Parma ham and rocket salad or variation thereof?

Tons...

Rest sounds good though! Good luck....

You could do a scallop and bacon salad with ciabatta croutons

You could do massalla monkfish with spiced lentils

You could do mini fish pies in ramekins with haddock, prawn and salmon, piped buttery mash and a parmesan crust

Don't cheat and buy a bloody lump of pate from the supermarket. You want to impress!

If you need more info, shout!

super easy: little puff pastry squares with a slice of goats cheese and a sprig of rosemary in the middle.

oven for 10 minutes, then a little posh oil drizzled on the top.

Actually no, a prawn is a crustacean not a fish...

I did mean some beautiful home made pate with fresh baked parmesan rolls or somesuch.

Pate in all its varieties has to be the easiest thing in teh world to make and can be done the day before. With the home made rolls; again, do small ones, some seeded, some olive oil, some parmesan etc. Nice little salad on teh side and everyone will be impressed.

People dont seem to realise how easy it is to knock up some fresh home baked rolls - always a winner!

Was thinking about black pud with mustard sauce.

Still looking for some inspiration though?

Individual Black pudding & Apple Rosti served with Salad leaves.

Grate potato, rince & squeeze to get rid of starchy liquid.
Mix with small cubes of Black Pudding, grated apple, eggs & flour.

Place desired quantity into frying pan and flatten out.
Cook like pancakes.

Serve with a little apple sauce

The black pudding rosti sound wonderful. Bot those and the pate seem a bit rich with beef Wellington though.

What about a simple asparagus with hollandaise, or a chilli and lemon butter sauce?

Good thought - courgette slices and grilled with mint, chilli and some feta or goats cheese are nice too.

:-o. It's admission time.

If we invite you to our house for dinner (and generally to stay over, for obvious reasons), it's because we think you're fascinating company, not so that I can spend the evening absent in the kitchen, being impressive.

Starters and puds are usually make-ahead, with a bit of effort on the main, before sobriety is an issue.

Do an antipasto platter, or a light soup with homemade bread or croutons.

What's the point in spending a fortune on a nice dining room , inviting fab people and then having an evening on your own in the kitchen?
