A friend of mine is going on a blind date in or around Waterloo next Friday and wants to take her to a bar for a relaxed evening of drinking and amusing conversation. Can anyone recommend somwhere classy but reasonably priced.

No oxo tower jokes please - he's heard them all before!

Or a nice pleasant walk across Waterloo Bridge and pop into the terrace at Somerset House. Great venu and if a date; should do the job much better than a pub under arches... smile

Skylon bar would be OK but very much the bar of a restaurant and what happens after an hour or so if going well? Eat there or from Somerset House, you have the whole of Covent Garden in front of you???

And is this an "I have a friend" as in "Dr., I have a mate who has this rather unpleasant....."? beer

I take it you are not familiar with either the Archduke or the South Bank smile Just the tourist Mecca that is Covent Garden !

Gordon's wine bar is a good bet. Can get a bit crowded just after the offices turf out, but mid afternoon it's tops. Not so much classy in the champers and yahoo stakes, more classy in the off beat kinda way. Recon is the way ahead.

I second this. Great place for a date: fantastic food and cocktails, lovely atmosphere and superb service. All followed by a lovely walk along South Bank.

I mis-read post. The Skylon is more of a restaurant. Having said that I enjoyed pre-dinner drinks here with a friend and we enjoyed the atmosphere and stunning views over the Thames. It didn't strike me as a place for first date drinks, but first date dinner, yes.

Sorry - I thought it was a date? Or possibly even a blind date? Know the Archduke, if it is the one under the arches and have been there. Have also had lunch over on South Bank many times. Walk along there often. In fact, I work across the bridge on the North side so familiar with the area.

If it is a (blind) date and the OP is asking for suggestions, then my guess is that across the bridge and towards COvent Garden would be more appropriate for him. Just an opinion mind.

Covent Garden does not just mean tourists! North of the river will have more of a chance of 'stumbling' into somewhere that does the job required than the SOuth Bank IMHO.

But don't forget, just an opinon! beer

Maybe he wants suggestions for Waterloo because of rail links?

Skylon is quiet so lots of seats and you'll be able to hear each other speak. I hate noisy and bustly pubs myself and would much prefer a quiet venue for a blind date. Skylon is always busy so they won't feel like they're stuck in a corner on your own.

And yet you call it a pub, whereas I think most other people would call it a wine bar, and it has a Jazz pianist most evenings..oh and a restaurant (of variable quality it has to be said).

Are you thinking about the Hole in the Wall ? Now that is a pub under the arches.

And there are plenty of places to eat within a very short walk of Skylon (the whole Festival hall is packed with places now). Whilst maybe not the numbers of Covent Garden, there are some great places to eat.

Forgot about the bar at the Marriott too, amazing views of Westminster. That is the thing about the Southbank, you are looking at the posh bit smile

All a bit late now, one hopes the blind date went well, and that one day he will take the lady up the....

Fair point - and not talking about Hole in the Wall!

I was more thinking about the occasion - a blind date.... although a nice place, not sure it would be MY first choice for a blind date! Maybe I am up my own OXO (see what I did there) but felt for a date, there are nicer places - oh, and I have eaten there. No pianist when I was there though...

Let's wait and see what happened/happens (when was the date again? smile)

You can't book ? Which could either be great or dire depending on how you get along smile

And pretty busy all the time. As are most places on a Friday, which is why I suggested with a restaurant bar or a hotel bar. Quieter, and less likelihood of bumping into me on a lads evening wink
