I'm a big fan of liquorice... particularly the Dutch ones, called Salmiak, which contain ammonium chloride (seriously!) and are VERY strong! Very popular in the Scandinavian countries too.

Anyway, today I received my latest order, which included a couple of varieties I hadn't tried before.

The Cherry and Chilli liquorice is relatively mild, as you chew you get a liquorice flavour which becomes a cherry-liquorice blend. Then a gentle hit of chilli which gets warmer as you go. Not too strong, but nice.

The Swedish Salty Liquorice Fish I absoloutely love. But most people, and even many hardened liquorice fans, would probably spit them out! They are strong liquorice dipped in pure salmiak powder and are INCREDIBLY strong and bitter to start with, but they slowly mellow as you chew, once the outer coating is gone. Definitely not for the faint-hearted!

Should be an interesting day tomorrow... will be trying them out on my work colleagues smile

How does Salmiak compare with Zuote Drop and Dubbel Zout?

Well, those contain regular salt (sodium chloride). But the salmiak versions are very strong compared to those. An acquired taste...

I always thought Fisherman's Friend was hot enough without adding chilli as well!

Ever tried Tyrkisk Peber? It's a Scandi thing.

Disgusting beyond imagination.

I live in Oslo, I've tried to get along with the black rank stuff but I can't.

I'll see if there's something worth buying tomorrow in the shop !

There are some little black diamond type things you can get in Germany which are real good. Pretty strong too.

I never used to like salty liquorice, even a few visits to Stockholm didn't change this!

However recently no trip to Ikea is complete without those mini dime bars (sorry daim these days) and some salty liquorice. I love it now smile

A couple of bags of this would make a nice little gift for Old Man Pints.
