Ceramic or Lava Which One ?

I know Charcoal is the best ..........read all the threads ..well most
But gas is the way Iam going to go as Iam a amateur when it comes to the out door cooking. So had a look at some bbqs, having deceided to go down the gas route and hit another dilemma !! Lava rocks or ceramic rocks or ceramic coated grills, some bbqs had no rocks with them at all why?? Dont you have to use lava/ceramic rocks if the grill is coated in ceramic?

I don't like ceramic stuff. I'd rather cat iron which you can go at with any kind of cleaning material or chemical you can think of. Ceramic is too easy to damage.
