I bought a cheap weber-a-like from B and Q last summer to see if I'd actually use it often enough and this summer, my thoughts are turning towards an upgrade to the real thing.

My question is what size?

My current one is about the size of a 47 cm and this fits perfectly in the shared stairwell of my flat and seems big enough for most of the cooking I've done on it.

Is there any advantage to the 57 other than the fact that you can cook more? Does it make heat management easier or anything like that?

I'd prefer the 47 for convenience but don't want to compromise on grilling ability...

Thanks!

I have a 47cm and I really wish I'd bought the larger 57cm version.

The 47cm is great, don't get me wrong. But smoking/indirect cooking in particular would be a lot easier on the larger one for a couple of reasons - the additional space for food and the ability to use more charcoal, allowing even longer cooking times.

But if you're just using it as a grill and don't plan on smoking or indirect cooking, then the 47cm is fine.

Also, get the one-touch or the one-touch premium. Makes it very easy to clean and to control temperature.

Thanks for the reply-I wondered if that might be the case. I'd like to do a bit more smoking and whatnot and it occurred to me that the bigger one might be better.

That said, do you manage to get decent results from the 47?

Oh yeah. But I'll let you be the judge...

Haha - Excellent! They look superb!

I'm still torn though - the smaller one would definitely fit the available space better and it looks like you can turn out an excellent BBQ on it...

I'll add a +1 to the "have a 47cm, wish I got the 57cm" brigade. The 47 is a bit of a struggle if you're feeding a crowd and there is lots more in the way of accessories for the 57, such as those nifty hinged grills and the charcoal baskets. More room for effective indirect cooking in the 57 too.

Had a 57 for a few years. Now getting into low temp cooking and with the 57 you can get a smokenator (www.smokenator.com) to extend the fun. Even after many winters outside the weber shows no sign of corrosion and is as consistent as ever. Just needs a cover for the cold months.

Ribs yesterday were fantastic (recommend the blue dragon sweet chilli dip for the last half hour) and have a boned leg of lamb for tomorrow.

Of course you can't get consistency without gas. It's the best stuff for lighting your charcoal ;-)

Yesterday I purchased a Weber 57". It was the only BBQ I could fit on my ladies lap in a car club 430 Spider.

Used the BBQ last night and it was awesome!!! Cooked for 10 guest on it.

Cheers.

That's a tough life you are leading bro, ladies laps, 57 inch Webers and 430 Spiders.

There's me with me Asda special, a wife who lights coals by just breathing on them and a diesel Yaris.

Mind you, I am going to win the cheese cooking competition woohoo

I have a 47cm Weber that I use as my secondary BBQ to a Weber Spirit gay gas powered grill - the 2 complement each other well.

If you're using the Kettle it as your main grill and you anticipae needing to cook for >4 people you'll be wanting the 57cm.

The 47cm suffers from a lack of height under the hood as well as from a limited cookign area.
