As above, what's your favourite lyrics?

I have loads but I've just been listening to Marilyn Manson - The Beautiful People and I think the line "I wasn't born with enough middle fingers" sums things up at the minute.

Or irresponsible hate anthem wink I've got quite a few but being an Oasis fanatic it's got to be Gas Panic or Scorpio Rising by Death in Vegas with Liam G. No lyrics in particular, just the way he delivers them.

I like Irresponsible hate anthem, those lyrics would make an awesome punk song! I hear what you're saying about Liam G, it's not so much what he sings, it's more the way he sings it. He has a sneer that's almost on par with Jonny Rotten!

Well, it does depend on your mood. Right now I'm not feeling at all misanthropic, and "I heard cathedral bells, dripping down the alleyways" is floating my boat (as a single line from a song)

For Emily biggrin

Another song, See Emily Play by Pink Floyd.

Now when we're on the subject of the Floyd, "Run rabbit run, dig that hole, forget the sun". I don't know what the true meaning is but it always made me think on having problems and running from them and burying your head in the sand.

Pink Floyd had some amazing, if slightly fked up lyrics.

I love this passage from Time:

Every year is getting shorter
Never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to nought
Or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is The English Way
The time has come
The song is over
Thought I'd something more to say

These ones are sticking with me at the moment...

Brad Paisley - One of those lives

Rush hour traffic always puts me in a bad mood
I got chewed out by the boss today
And now I’m stuck on highway 92
Then you call me on my cell phone
While I’m cussing out a Cadillac
You say remember tom and Janie’s little boy
Well, the doctors say the cancers back

Man, its been one of those days
When I been thinking poor me
I got no right to complain I guess
Cause right now all I can see
A little angel in a Yankees cap
It makes me realize
It just been one of those days
But for him its been one of those lives

I love Country Music but the Schmaltz overwhelms me sometimes...

These always make me smile:

Highways and dancehalls
A good song takes you far
Your write about the moon
And you dream about the stars
Blues in old motel rooms
Girls in daddy’s car
You sing about the nights
And you laugh about the scars
Coffee in the morning, cocaine afternoons
You talk about the weather
And you grin about the rooms
Phone calls long distance,
To tell how you’ve been
Forget about the losses, you exaggerate the wins
And when you stop to let ’em know
You’ve got it down
It’s just another town along the road

The ladies come to see you
If your name still rings a bell
They give you damn near nothin’
And they’ll say they knew you well
So you tell ’em you’ll remember
But they know it’s just a game
And along the way their faces
All begin to look the same
And when you stop to let ’em know
You got it down
It’s just another town along the road

Well it isn’t for the money
And it’s only for a while
You stalk about the rooms
And you roll away the miles
Gamblers in the neon, clinging to guitars
You’re right about the moon
But you’re wrong about the stars
And when you stop to let ’em know
You got it down
It’s just another town along the road.

and also:

I'm sitting down by the highway
Down by that highway side
Everybody's going somewhere
Riding just as fast as they can ride
I guess they've got a lot to do
Before they can rest assured
Their lives are justified
Pray to God for me baby
He can let me slide

'Cause I've been up and down this highway
Far as my eyes can see
No matter how fast I run
I can never seem to get away from me
No matter where I am
I can't help feeling I'm just a day away
From where I want to be
Now I'm running home baby
Like a river to the sea

Baby if you can see me
Out across this wilderness
There's just one thing
I was hoping you might guess
Baby you can free me
All in the power of your sweet tenderness

I can see it in your eyes
You've got those bright baby blues
You don't see what you've got to gain
But you don't like to lose
You watch yourself from the sidelines
Like your life is a game you don't mind playing
To keep yourself amused
I don't mean to be cruel baby
But you're looking confused

Baby if you can hear me
Turn down your radio
There's just one thing
I want you to know
When you've been near me
I've felt the love stirring in my soul

It's so hard to come by
That feeling of peace
This friend of mine said
"Close your eyes, and try a few of these"
I thought I flying like a bird
So far above my sorrow
But when I looked down
I was standing on my knees
Now I need someone to help me
Someone to help me please

Baby if you need me
Like I know I need you
There's just one thing
I'll ask you to do
Take my hand and lead me
To the hole in your garden wall
And pull me through...

and then there's the blessed Harry Chapin:

I Wanna Learn a Love Song Lyrics
Artist(Band):Harry Chapin
Review The Song (6) Print the Lyrics

Send "I Wanna Learn a Love Song" Ringtones to Cell

I come fresh from the street,
fast on my feet, kind a lean and lazy;
not much meat on my bones, and a whole lot alone,
and more than a little bit crazy.
The old six string was all I had
to keep my belly still,
and for each full hour lesson I gave
I got a crisp ten dollar bill.

She was married for seven years
to a concrete castle king.
She said she wanted to learn to play the guitar
and to hear her children sing.
So I'd show up about once a week
in my faded tight-legged jeans
with a backlog full of hobo stories
and dilapidated dreams.

She said, "I wanna learn a love song full of happy things."
She said, "I wanna learn a love song; won't you let me hear you sing?"
She said, "I wanna learn a love song, I wanna hear you play."
She said, "I wanna learn a love song before you go away."

So I tried to teach her a couple of chords
and an easy melody;
but it always turned out she'd rather listen
to my guitar and me.
I could hear her old man laughing in the den,
playing stud poker with the boys
while I sang so soft in the living room,
to scared to make much noise.
I came one week and the den was dark
and she met me at the door.
And we sat on the couch and we sang and talked
till I could not sing no more.
The silence kept on building,
her eyes grew much too wide;
and I could her both of our heartbeats,
but there was no place to hide.

She said, "I wanna learn a love song full of happy things."
She said, "I wanna learn a love song; won't you let me hear you sing?"
She said, "I wanna learn a love song, I wanna hear you play."
She said, "I wanna learn a love song before you go away."

Well, I guess you know what happened,
God, I never been so clean.
Yes, I feel like I'm working in a Hollywood movie
or living out a good bad dream.
And all them pinup girls in that tinsel world
never touched me like she can;
it took another man's wife in the real world life
to make this boy a man.

She said, "I wanna learn a love song full of happy things."
She said, "I wanna learn a love song; won't you let me hear you sing?"
She said, "I wanna learn a love song, I wanna hear you play."
She said, "I wanna learn a love song before you go away."
I guess you know I stayed.

Sweet Zombie Jesus, how long have you got? As previous lyric quiz compiler on this site I could go on for hours. My favourite lyrics fall into two catagories, either the whole song or more frequently just a small sample that perfectly sums up a situation.

"I know a girl from a lonely street, cold as ice cream but still as sweet,"

"Called you so many times today and I guess its all true what your girlfriends say. That you don't ever want to see me again & your brothers going to kill me and he's 6ft 10,"

"Seen man standing over a dead dog, down by the highway in a ditch. He's looking down kinda puzzled, poking that dog with a stick. His car door flung open, standing out on Highway 41. Like if he stood there long enough, that dog would get up and run."

"As 20 cannibals have hold of you, they need their protein just like you do,"

"You never knew the teenage me & you would not believe the things you didn't see; some pretty, some ugly,"

"I hear the songs of the cities & the dispossessed, get down, get undressed!"

"Don't think that I understand, I care. Don't think because we're talking, we're friends,"

"Guess I was wrong because you fled. Leaving me with my Michelin guide and half empty foreign bed,"

"Todays the 4th of July, another June has gone by. & tonight when they light up our town, I'll just think what a waste of gunpowder and sky,"

"Its just gone noon, half past moonson on the banks of the River Nile!"

"Maybe we'll leave come spring time, meantime have another beer. Who cares about all these jerks anyway? And besides, all our friends are here,"

"He'll leave you black and blue, he'll rip your heart in two. Then he'll wake up in the morning and say 'Who the fk are you?'"

"You can dance if you want to, you can leave your friends behind. Cos your friends don't dance & if they don't dance, then they're no friends of mine,"

And I haven't even started on love songs which is where a good lyricist can really excel. But if you want to hear a recent song with amazing lyrics, try EG - If You Run. An incredible song.

Pretty much the whole of Man of The World - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDGi0SZkgpI

and "Beautiful Losers" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=toVfk2LQMlM

Not being much of a writer (of anything really..) I'm always intrigued where lyrics come from, e.g.
OCS - Half a dream away
"The rainbow frowned when the sun was shining
A baby's snatched on a beautiful morning
A dog runs wild and the brakes are screaming
A church on fire is struck by lightning
The dead man's hands had beautiful fingers
The princess frowned at her lovers mistress
She went insane and poisoned the children
A teacher's drowned and a child is laughing"

Another OCS track is "Charlie Brown Says" which is beautifully written but the line that stands out to me is "Five o'clock shoes full of snow", great imagery of a cold lonely day.

Paul Weller - Driving Nowhere
"I've nowhere to be - only leave some miles behind, And within me I see, there's places I've yet to find"

Paul Weller - Hung Up
"Hidden in the back seat of my head, Some place I can't remember where
I found it just by coincidence, An' now I'm all hung up again"

To be honest most of Wellers stuff works, especially lesser known tracks like "Country", "Wings of speed" and "Brushed". "Moon on your pyjamas" was written for one of his kids and is a great little nursery rhyme.

Muse - The Smallprint
"Take, take all you need and I'll compensate your greed, with broken hearts
Sell, I'll sell your memories for 15 pounds per year, but just the good days"

Muse - Hoodoo
"And I've had recurring nightmares, that I was loved for who I am
And missed the opportunity to be a better man"

Van Morrison - Who was that masked man
"Oh ain't it lonely
When you're livin' with a gun
Well you can't slow down and you can't turn 'round
And you can't trust anyone"

The best version is from Carleen Anderson

Fleetwood Mac - "Love that burns"
"But please don't leave me with a love that burns"
Beach Boys - Little Deuce Coupe
"And comin' off the line when the light turns green
Well she blows 'em outta the water like you never seen
I get pushed out of shape and it's hard to steer
When I get rubber in all four gears"

must be the only time when 'getting rubber' impresses the girls!

The whole song is very pistonheads really..

Little deuce Coupe
You don't know what I got
Little deuce Coupe
You don't know what I got

Well I'm not braggin' babe so don't put me down
But I've got the fastest set of wheels in town
When something comes up to me he don't even try
Cause if I had a set of wings man I know she could fly
She's my little deuce coupe
You don't know what I got
(My little deuce coupe)
(You don't know what I got)

Just a little deuce coupe with a flat head mill
But she'll walk a Thunderbird like (she's) it's standin' still
She's ported and relieved and she's stroked and bored.
She'll do a hundred and forty with the top end floored
She's my little deuce coupe
You don't know what I got
(My little deuce coupe)
(You don't know what I got)

She's got a competition clutch with the four on the floor
And she purrs like a kitten till the lake pipes roar
And if that aint enough to make you flip your lid
There's one more thing, I got the pink slip daddy

And comin' off the line when the light turns green
Well she blows 'em outta the water like you never seen
I get pushed out of shape and it's hard to steer
When I get rubber in all four gears

She's my little deuce coupe
You don't know what I got
(My little deuce coupe)
(You don't know what I got)
She's my little deuce coupe
You don't know what I got
(My little deuce coupe)
(You don't know what I got)
She's my little deuce coupe
You don't know what I got

lots.

But I played this again today:

Do You Realize - that you have the most beautiful face
Do You Realize - we're floating in space -
Do You Realize - that happiness makes you cry
Do You Realize - that everyone you know someday will die

And instead of saying all of your goodbyes - let them know
You realize that life goes fast
It's hard to make the good things last
You realize the sun doesn't go down
It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round
