You often hear some DJ has made a remix of someone else's track. I was wondering if they are given the original samples or is it a case of just taking the original track and sampling bits from it and then sending it to the original producer? Just how does it work?

More often than not you have to extract what you want from the original track.

Official remixes get original data.
