Might shock you with all the rock and metal I've been posting but I'm also a big Johhny Cash fan.
A lot of people sideline him into the country genre but he's covered so many different types of music. He was a genuine music fan recording tributes to everyone from U2 to Nine Inch Nails.
Heres a few choice tunes,
The one that put him into the public view,

This song always makes me smile, from the famous gig in San Quentin prison, February 24th 1969,

A bit of rockabilly from 1956, great uplifting lyrics too,

Johnny was a great supporter of people in prison, realising that most of them were there not because they were bad people but simply because they had made mistakes in life,

An intense song,

Everyone knows this one, Cash fan or not. This song was written by his wife for him along with Merle Kilgore. Really deep lyrics,

Just a great song, I love the way the tempo picks up as it goes on and sucks you right in. From a gig in Poland in 1987,

One of many duets recorded with his wife June Carter, probably the most famous,

I could go on posting great JC songs all day but I'll finish with this one. A poignant, haunting song, made even more so by the fact that it was the last song he ever recorded shortly before his death on September 12th, 2003 at the age of 71. Originally recorded by NIN but I think Johnny did a better job of it than Trent Reznor.

Another metalhead with a liking for Mr Cash here, at least his American stuff anyway. The Rick Rubin connection was what did it for me - he's produced some of my favourite metal and I think his stripped-down sound works really well with a country artist.
I would also agree that Cash did 'Hurt' even better than Reznor, and that's from someone who was a massive NIN fan back in the day. I think his take on 'Personal Jesus' is brilliant as well - that was always one of my least favourite Depeche Mode tracks but he makes it somehow more convincing.

The song that got me into JC was 'Give My Love To Rose' ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1LBKTONZ0M&fea... ), very melancholic and immediately made me go and start listening to his other stuff....

Anybody that says they can't find anything in Johnny Cash must surely be dead
