I'm envious of you - must be brilliant hearing all that stuff for the first time. Bit of an Almost Famous under the bed moment
I grew up with it so it was always around.
John Peel said that he felt sorry for the youth of the day that they'll never have that experience where for the first time in their lives they hear 'Hey Joe' played on the radio and go, 'What the f*ck was that!' and have their musical boundaries completely re-written.
Lucky you!

I was at their first in the UK when they re-formed.
thanks for all the input and other good bands to look out for, i did have rainbow rising and down to earth after there single hit, since youve been gone. so have now got 2cd best of rainbow, heard lynrd skynyrds simple man on planet rock that made me stop and listen, not to keen on a recent purchest aerosmiths young lust, i do like rag doll and sweet emotion which has that 90's manchester sound about it, but its a live version on this cd. oh and thanks to black hole sun ive now got sound gardens cd.
70's is no good alone, you need to delve into the late 60s as well. Lots of good stuff.
Should mention Fleetwood Mac prior to Buckingham/Nicks in 74 - just listen to the guitar work of Danny Kirwan (he was just a kid) and Peter Green together. I'll never forget when I first saw them in 1968.
Sadly both blown away by drugs and drink and never the same.

Dear shagracer (pt II),
Couple more:
The Faces - homegrown, tinge of popular but "Stay with me" has a cracking crescendo to the end.
Secondly Dr Feelgood,
regards,
Jet
ETA Has anyone posited Thin Lizzy? Yes they have!

Early ZZ Top is fab stuff as well.
Stick on 'Brown Sugar' loud and wait for it to kick in.
