Bert Jansch, a founding member of the band Pentangle and a well-known guitarist in his own right, has died at the age of 67.
Jansch, who had cancer, passed away in the early hours of Wednesday morning at a hospice in Hampstead, north London.

Bert Jansch was quite breathtaking in the early 1960's a driving force of a guitarist of outstanding and unequalled ability.
I heard him play on the London Uni circuits and when the crowd got a bit rowdy he put his guitar down and said quietly 'If you do not shut up I won't play.' They shut up!
Subsequently I met and played with Jansch and the great John Renbourne through my good friend Gordon Giltrap another outstanding guitarist.
I was also lucky enough to meet and see Davy Graham the big Daddy of them all playing at the same time.
The Jansch version of the Angie theme by Davy Graham on the original 1960's first Jansch album is still without a doubt the best version I have ever heard.
The pounding bass produced by Jansch and the sheer ripping attack of the piece is truly world class. Often copied never bettered.
We may never see the likes again. He will live on in our memories.

Indeed it is and I was one of the students who saw him play this in London in the 1960's in Soho in one of the clubs about then.
But as a solo piece the Jansch version is head and shoulders better.
