It can't be because the song says that the preacher had seen her & Billy Joe throwing something off the bridge. My theories for what they are worth are;

1.) Billy Joe or the girl has murdered someone for whatever reason and they both chucked the corpse into the river. He's taken the blame and now done a runner.
2.) The preacher never says the size of the thing that they saw being thrown off the bridge. The girl's stillborn/aborted baby & again Billy Joes done a runner in case anyone did find out?

3.) Given the time that the song came out, has Billy Joe & the girl faked his death so he could dodge the Vietnam draft?

Curious song whatever it means.
