You and your OH - matching music tastes?
Discussion
The OH and I have similar taste but disagree on some stuff. For example we both love Ocean Colour Scene and Embrace but I like Stone Roses whereas she likes James... I went to a James gig with her and she's coming along to the Roses with me.
I also like loads of ecclectic stuff she doesn't get so there will always be differences but when we met it was great as we share each others catalogues.
I think it would be a little boring if you like the same stuff but at the same time, it helps if there is some crossover.

We do and we don't. We both love blues (Peter Green and Gary Moore style especially), and we both enjoy classical.
I also love a bit of trance, whereas mrs k hates it on a cellular level. She loves Motown, all of it, whereas I am a fence sitter on it.
If I play any Soundgarden / Pantera / Megadeth, her central nervous system implodes.
Our perfect common ground is Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No.2

Her: wide ranging. Hates opera. Likes Adele, Pink, Embrace, Charlatans, quite a lot of jock rock, lady gg, doesn't do heavy metal or similar but likes some of the foo fighters. Loves tom petty, travis, james, brandon flowers. Worst album - probably steps.
Me: wide ranging the other way. Love opera, love classical music. Love blues. Grew up with a lot of prog rock - floyd, peter gabriel, marillion etc. Love arcade fire, broken social scene, old rolling stones, zz top, love my niche indie like twilight sad, black keys, bon iver, british sea power, clap your hands say yeah, interpol, editors, guillemots, the national, bloc party, TV on the radio, editors etc.
Bands I got her into: the killers, muse, tom mcrae, damien rice, guillemots, noah and the whale, mumford and sons, elbow, edward sharpe and the magnetic zeros, bright eyes, arcade fire, flaming lips.
Bands she got me into: teenage fanclub, old bryan adams, feeder, paloma faith, the tings tings, the vaccines, vampire weekend.
Where we'll never agree: Twilight Sad (mine), Scissor Sisters (hers), Interpol (mine), Fatboy Slim (hers) and any band with the word 'bass' in their name (hers).

Not at all. We listen to music for different reasons.
she listens to:
- Bjork
- Portishead
- Modest Mouse
- Thom Yorke
- Radiohead
- Yeah Yeah Yeahs
and the odd smattering of "death metal"
Me, basically generic s
t you hear on BBC Radio1. Combined with some euphoric 90s dance music, the odd bit of Nickelback. And then some classics such as:
- Phil Collins
- Dr Hook
- Dire Straits
- Rod Stewart
As well as current faviourites: Mumford & Sons. And The Black Keys. chase &status. Clare MacGuire.
I can happily tolerate her music, as long as not driving and tired. And in the right setting, actively enjoy it.
She hates my music, all of it. Every last second of it.

Having similar tastes is fantastic. With my ex we had little music wise in common, but that was manageable, even if it meant going to gigs alone. We did occasionally collide - Kaiser Chiefs, A-Ha, spring to mind.
But my fiancee now has similar tastes - a lot of 80s synth stuff, Mike Oldfield, even Rammstein who we're seeing at the weekend. She doesn't get Marilyn Manson or Nirvana but that's ok. The downside is I had to take her to see John Barrowman last year and twice went to see Adam Ant...
But in terms of music in the car, around the house, gig going generally - we're either mostly in agreement or can tolerate it.
If she started listening to anything Simon Cowell related it would be the end (yes ok, I'm joking). Fortunately she hates that saccharine coated commercial pap as much as I do.
In conclusion - I LOVE having a partner with similar musical tastes.

We have similar tastes. I'm a rap fan first but like my soul, reggae, jazz etc. She's a reggae fan first but likes the similar things. She's probably a bit more open minded than I am. Jamaican's tend to be very open minded when it comes to music as I found out being in the middle of a session in downtown Kingston and to hear a dj throw on Celine Dion.
