Jazz club in new york

I am off to New York next month and I'd love to see some live jazz while I'm there. I'm going on my own so I don't want to go anywhere in too dodgy an area but if it's an amazing venue then I could get a cab.

There are loads of venues about but can anyone recommend anywhere from personal experiance?

Went to Zinc last March. Good music, modern be-bop quartet. Just off Bleaker St edge of Greenwich village. Would recommend it.

The Village Vanguard is legendary. The Mingus Big Band also still play (I think) at the Fez under Time Cafe once a week - well worth a look.
