Sad news, quite liked the Monkees.

Quite young.

He was selected for The Monkees because he had an English accent - which the TV production company felt was compulsory for a TV show about a pop group in the mid 1960s. He was actually a talented child actor and had appeared earlier in Coronation Street.

They suffered from the whole 'made for television' issue, but when you compare it with the dross we get now in the way of manufactured bands....

At least the four of them made music that will be remembered.
As a tedious old punk I can honestly say that I loved the stuff they did.

A couple of years in they rebelled against their management and refused to mime to other people's music any more. When they started doing it themselves they made some cracking records.

As a tribute, I shall have their greatest hits CD on the headphones when I go to bed tonight ...

Always remember watching the Monkees on TV after coming home from school and they had some properly good pop songs.

very sad - relatively young age to pop your clogs these days. Monkees did some pretty decent pop songs.

Very sad and surprising given his lifestyle and age. Seemed a decent chap in conversation, and it's always good fun to have a singalong to the old stuff.

His family must be in a right state given the suddenness. My heart goes out to them.

Always liked their music, even saw them in concert at the BIC in Bournemouth once (without Mike) in either '89 or '90.
66 is no age at all. A sad day.

Despite their "manufactured label", their stream of pop hits was incredible. They were outselling The Beatles and The Stones in 1968 apparently.
