Radio for small shop

Due to the large amount of cash PRS want for us to play music in our tiny shop I am having to get a stand alone radio, as this is the cheapest option to be able to play music....
Thus, does anyone know of a radio that would be loud enough for a 20 odd square metre shop? It cannot have a CD player or anything, just a radio....

No, you don't "need" a PRS license for anything. PRS are entitled to ask for money for using their music, and can take you to the small claims court if you don't want to pay. But if PRS music is played, regardless of if it's radio or CD, they'll want money.

Yes, this is what I thought. I believe they have no right of entry so if you have a factory or something and they turn up you just refuse to let them in.But if PRS music is played, regardless of if it's radio or CD, they'll want money.
If you have a premises where they can just walk in then you are at risk of prosecution. Something in my memory tells me that it was Kwik-Fit that were successfully prosecuted by them, although I may be wrong.........

As an example, if you have a picture on Flickr, and someone uses it on their website without asking, you can take them to the small claims court and sue them for that. That's what the PRS are doing, they have no special powers over and above the man in the street.

I didn't realise there were different costs depending on whether you played the radio or a recording on an iPod! WRT unsigned bands, I thought that was the way to get around it. What if I made my own music? Do I have to pay the PRS?

Kwik-Fit used to play music in their premises in Streatham. PRS have offices next door. Oops!Dickster said:

PRS can only ask for money for published work. If your local band play their own original work that isn't published, you don't need a PRS licence. If, however thay are playing covers, you do. We went through all this with them a couple of year back at our factory. The first time they rang through the MD thought they were actually having a laugh and hung up. A week later a letter came through and our radio in the factory got turned off and taken away.
We're now running a communications radio on AM and receiving Five Live, which is actually pretty good as opposed to the local crappy FM station we had before. Because its a comms radio and not a branded make of receivers we stuck a label on it saying its test equipment. Gives us two lines of defence if they try and visit, one being no access to public without an appointment, the second being its just test equipment and part of our EMC testing station.

Sorry, should have been more specific. I was wondering about how this might vary if you're playing your own music but...A: Are an unsigned artist, or
B: Are signed but hold your own publishing rights, or
C: Are signed and publishing rights are held by a music publisher, i.e., not you the artist
If you have no publishing deal, and play your own original music, PRS have nothing to do with you and can't ask for money if it's played anywhere. If you play music written by any other artist that is a PRS member (That's just about all of us), or if your music is published, then PRS will ask for money.
