I know there is a guitar thread, but I couldn't see another for other instruments. Interested to see them all.
I'll start!
Just aquired this:

Rather pleased! Roland TD10 Expanded with mesh heads. I couldn't stretch to a TD20/30 but to be honest, don't think I needed to. The feel and flexibility of the kit is superb.
I also have a Yamaha DTXpress II which i've used for years, but wanted a larger more realistic kit.
I have an 8-piece accoustic set but it's too loud for where I live.
Excuse the floor
it's the next thing to be done.

You chose the same path as me - I went from a Yamaha DTX thing to a Roland TD10. Tempted by a TD20 but it's difficult to justify the cost and the TD10 is very good. I dabbled with triggering samples (Superior Drummer 2.0) which freshened the sounds up but I still use the on-board sounds when I just want a quick practice.
Only change I've made in 5 years of ownership was to ditch the original hi-hat and go for the new version which you use on a normal hi-hat stand - make a huge difference and is an upgrade I'd fully recommend.

I used to have saxophone lessons in a 'music academy' (damp wee building behind the highstreet) near me, saw the drums and always fancied a go..
Started to save up for it but it seemed to be taking forever and I wasn't enjoying the sax lessons very much any more. Still have it but don't play.

I really enjoyed learning when I started with the saxophone, after going through a few books my teacher put me on classical music
Stopped enjoying it at that point
Couldn't find much in the way of books at some local shops and I wasn't internet-savvy at the time
There really is absolutely no substitute for classical training, even if ultimately, you're interested in another genre.Stopped enjoying it at that point

If someone "switches on" later in their development, then more hardcore training can always follow, but they've got to still be playing by that point...! If an early push in a direction the student is totally disinterested in means they quit the instrument, the teacher has failed, IMO.

I'd argue there's no substitute for good training. I teach, and a large part of teaching is making sure the student is happy and motivated to learn. If they want to play rock and pop, then there's plenty of beginner level stuff that goes in that direction. I wouldn't push my chosen jazz (and it's associated complex theory) on an adult beginner who's dream was to blow his sax at the local blues jam session, for example.
