Playing an instrument again after 12 years

I use to play the Cello, was very good years ago.

Stopped and sold everything relating to it.

Thinking of buying one again and starting to play, but scared that I will never remember how to do it and it be a waste of money if I am completely useless and get put off by it.

Has anyone done this successfully?

I stopped playing guitar 20 years ago. I recently (8 weeks) ago got back into it. I'm probably technique wise just as good, if not better now. I just forgot ALL the theory though.
