can anyone compare these electronic drum kits..?

Looking at too models of electronic kit for a beginner to bash away at.
Roland TD9k & Alesis DM10.
The Alesis seems to have a lot more modern tech to it, but seems to be a pain to set up. I have nt used one before and so don't want to be stuck trying to get sounds I don't know I'm looking for. I'd like to have a reasonable amount of plug n play.
Can anyone comment on either of these kits (or similar - Yamaha perhaps?)

Between those two go for the Roland - the drum shop I use advise they have numerous issues with the reliability of Alesis products.
FWIW my latest electronic kit is a Yamaha DTX530 - I've had a Roland before and on advice decided to give the Yamaha a go and it's been great - numerous gigs with it so far and no issues whatsoever - perhaps consider the Yamaha range as well.

Thanks - what is the comparable Yamaha kit to the Alessi and Roland kit? I don't hear much about Yamaha - Rland gets mentioned as being the Daddy and Alessi are the young pretenders. It is like Yamaha gets forgotten - if you could give a wider view of your kit that would be great.

Not really (unless you're referring to Roland vs Alessi).
FWIW my previous Roland was ok but I never liked the feel of mesh V-drum heads, Yamaha have now created the DTX pad, it's a lovely surface to play (though still not really comparable to an acoustic head) and for this reason I'd take the Yammie over the Roland (the electronic module will be equal quality for both imo).

Mesh heads are the cloest you'll get to playing proper drum heads. Simple pads don't give enough bounce - Great for practice, but rubbish for enjoying yourself. Pads are fine for hats and cymbals, which naturally give less rebound, but for toms, no way... And Roland stuff is largely bomb-proof. You could argue that mesh heads give too much bounce, but if you loosen them off a fair bit they're not dissimilar to an 8"or 10" tom.
