The Cure- 'love cats' bass

Was this recorded using an upright bass or a fretless electric bass?

In the video a double bass is used, but I believe that was just a prop, the video obliquely referencing the Disney film The Aristocats (everybody Wants To Be a Cat song). On the record, and having seen them live once (1989) a six string electric bass guitar was played on this and every other song. Certainly Robert Smith always wielded one of these, but he did not play bass on The Lovecats.

Thanks for that, it's a very upright-like tone but it's interesting to know it's a bass guitar. Was the bass used live a fretted instrument or unfretted? On the album recording, the slides are far too smooth to be a fretted guitar!
