Actually, it's beautifully sung and for me, it's better than FGTH.

Wouldn't be hard Holly Johnson's voice doesn't suit ballads...

Meh. Prettily sung (in that oh-so-fragile I-might-get-bulimia-any-moment way) and well produced, but it just doesn't build any emotional momentum.

Unlike Frankie's version.

To be honest I think it's dire. The girl has a great voice, but one that is ill suited to the song. She just doesn't have the oomph to carry it off, and whilst the Tears for Fears track worked in the slow melancholic style I just don't think The Power of Love does; it's the contrast between the spoken bits and the soaring chorus that make it for me.

I remember hearing a similar version of this some years ago on the TV and I can't for the life of me think who sang it. It was one person on a piano, and the other singing. I want to say it was Alison Moyet singing but I'm not sure. Anyone else remember?

I'm not so bothered about this one, especially where she seems to sing "lovers entwine, define define" when I'm sure the lyric is "divine, divine". Perhaps it's just pronunciation.

Shame that the reformed FGTH with Ryan Molloy never went anywhere, he was so utterly different in style to Holly, but after the Trevor Horn gig I would have loved to have heard a proper studio album.

The cover used in the advert is just a bit weak for me, like so many 80s covers they lack the passion of the original.

I could not disagree any more strongly. I think it's a very emotive rendition, properly leaves me welled up after a full listen.

I agree, I've heard loads of people saying how good this cover is but I just don't rate it.

He was one of the other 'acts' in the charts at the same time as FGTH with a song titled 'The Power of Love'.

For bonus '80s old git points, can anyone else remember the third act.?

She has a great voice but lacks the emotion of the original and fails big time ,,, they should now re release the original which was such a great track

Jennifer Rush.

Knowing about the 80s doesn't make me an old git.

I was there, and it was dire! (I mean the Jennifer Rush tune). wink

Back on topic, Frankies version was brilliant IMO. The new one does nothing for me at all.....

Curious; not sure whether to hug or slap...

FWIW, I think that if you're going to do a stripped-down and fragile cover of a big song, you need to draw out some nuance that wasn't there in the original. She didn't do that for me.

Different song, but as an example, I prefer this sort of cover: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NEtRTAIZyU0
