The first gig I ever went to, at the age of 15, was Rory Gallagher at the Brighton Dome in 1978 and the experience has stayed with me till this day. I saw him many times since that first gig, all in the south east of England and the last was at the Worthing Assembly Halls in, I guess about 1992 and his passing away in 1995 was a real shock.
Anyway, another shock 17 years on happened just this afternoon when the Asda delivery man knocks on the door with the Christmas essentials and he's wearing a Rory Gallagher cap. I remark "great cap mate he was one of the best, saw him seven or eight times", the response was "you've seen my old man then". Puzzled I remark "er why?" "well I'm the son of the base player - Gerry McAvoy".
He looks about 25 but clearly knows his stuff after a quick chat about the Gallagher band and he's off on his way. Quick google on Gerry and the photo's show his son is the absolute spit. Absolutely made my day, if not the week.
Love it when small things mean so much.

Superb player, have quite a few of his LP's.

'Live in Europe' being the favourite.

Never thought that the vocals were quite up to the standard of the guitar playing though.

Saw him many times.

Last time at the Free Trade hall in Manchester, sadly both Rory and the Free Trade Hall are now gone.

Saw him while I was a student in Sheffield (City Hall?) - total power failure mid way through the gig - he just carried on with an acoustic set under the emergency lights - one of the best gigs I've ever been to!

I never did see Rory live, but I do vividly remember hearing him for the first time: listening to his first LP with his group Taste.

Shortly after, I asked my step-brother to teach me the basics on the guitar.
