I know next to nothing about playing guitar. Less than nothing to be fair.

Is this real? I assume its quite impressive if so.

Oh apologies for the liveleak link.

Yes, it's real. He's got an echo effect added, with the repeats set to match the tempo he's playing at. He's using it to add the "in-between" notes that give it the faster and super consistent and insistent rythmn. As the echoes fade they also add an ambient atmospheric quality. Both help nail the trance-like feel.

It's not so uncommon. Eddie Van Halen used the same idea in Cathedral in the '80s - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2WRGVJLZu0 - although he also adjusted the Volume control on the guitar for each note to give a string-like attack (instead of the faster picked attack).

In both cases, if the echoes weren't there, you'd hear that the guitar playing is a LOT simpler. (Not to undermine the musical creativity, though).

The edge built a career on a similar technique.

I like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLpbZZ1HgPg

I was looking for something else but this is that same type of thing again. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=at8jUWoyBeQ

I'm at work so can't open the links, but I presume that this is the Ewan Dobson track that is doing the rounds again? It seems to pop up every so often.

Yes, he is playing it and, as others have said, is using a digital echo like The Edge of U2 does.

Pink Floyd's Run Like Hell also uses digital delay to good effect in this way. 840msec delay IIRC.

This type of guitar sound was mastered by John Martyn in the early 70s to stunning effect in my opinion.

Zack B did a drums cover of this:

And now it seems they're going to be collaborating.

Good stuff.

We went to see Andy McKee on the strength of Candyrat records' uploads on you tube. He's every bit as good as he looks & he's lost the Taliban beard!

I like GG.

He's also very approachable via his website. Had a good convo with him a few years back regarding a folk acoustic I'd just bought.

It won't! No tap tempo which would make it an absolute pain in the arse for something like this wink

Pfft! Only girls need tap tempo for this.

Back in my day (when it was all fields round here) we could only dream of tap tempo. We had to set our delay time on manky analogue delay pedals where all the knobs were broken off the pot shafts and you had to use pliers to adjust the settings.
