What new instrument you learning to play in 2013?

Hey folks, thought it might be fun to find out what new instrument people are learning to play this year. Might be a good thread to share experiences, resources found, bad habits gained, songs murdered and triumphant achievements!
I'll start. I am learning to play the Banjo. Been messing about with the ukulele for the last 4 years but I am not that great as I use it as an easy de-stress so don't take it very seriously cos it is my 'fun' time. The banjo is a lot harder (especially Scruggs style bluegrass
) but I reckon in about 10 years I might be able to play something recognisable!

I looked at this thread title and thought "I bet nobody else is learning to play the banjo".
I'm also learning Scruggs-style. Did you get his book? It's brilliant.
Luckily I've been playing guitar for years so the picking style isn't completely new to me, but getting the speed anywhere near as fast as it needs to be is a struggle.

Electronic kits are very good these days. I have a Yamaha DTX530 which utilizes Yamaha's special silicone pads (these are way better than mesh or rubber heads IMO)and the hi-hat controller uses a proper hi-hat stand/pedal. I use a double pedal on mine too.Just looking at your profile and you're in the opposite corner of the country to me! Have a look at www.drumsense.com or www.drumteachers.co.uk for someone in your area. I teach the Drumsense system as it's tried and tested and very well structured.

Fair play to you. Not only does the sitar look physicalluly difficult to play but there will be a whole new raft of scales etc to learn! Do you learn where the 'western notes' are first before going onto the modes?Me and the misses are looking into the Sitar :-) Amazing instrument. Totally different way of doing/playing music. It is difficult to play! Have to sit crossed leg on the floor. Which hurts after a while if you are as unfit and inflexible as I am.We're starting with some basic scales, and to be honest, a c major scale (raga) is very similar to a western scale. You swap a note for something else, I cannot remember for the life of me what it is.
Needless to say, its very confusing, very different, but a great sounding instrument.
As we're not bad with guitars, its fairly easy to play a basic melody and play along with stuff, but to play it properly... no idea. Yet.
