Drums - Roland TD4KP?

Hopefully PH knows more drummers than I do

I was looking to get myself drums after starting lessons last year. My teacher has a Roland super set of V drums so I fancied an acoustic set for myself at home to play on both kinds.

The problem is, I have no space for it inside. Thought about getting a shed, but by the time I fork out for something big enough and then stick a kit in, it's going to take more time and money. And then they'd get damp and all that jazz.

So- does anyone have experience with diddy electric kits or this one in particular? I was thinking about taking a mooch to PMT in Saaufend, don't really know many music shops in Essex.

Its going for £600 all in, and (as expected) the video on the Roland website makes it look like the bees knees..

Electronic kits are very good these days. You won't go far wrong with Roland. Is the kit you mention equipped with mesh heads? I tried several before I went for my Yamaha as I much preferred the silicon pads on that over the mesh heads. I find mesh heads tend to flatter your playing with far too much bounce plus I've head they can lead to joint problems (not bothered to look into how much this part was true as by then I'd already decided that I preferred the Yammy!)

I think I had a bash on an old kit in a lesson once that was the same type of thing. Sounds like it's all fairly interchangeable and you can swap for other Roland bits.

What we tried to find (but didn't manage to) was if it had an aux-in jobbie to let you play along to music..

- And thanks for the opinion! I didn't know about the difference in heads. People like Roland and Yamaha do seem the way to go so far

I have the Alesis DM8-Pro electronic kit. I played several roland kits before trying the Alesis and what stood out for me was the fact that you dont have to make do with rubber or mesh heads. The DM8-pro lets you use actual drum skins from any manufacturer you wish, remo, evans for example so it actually feels like playing an acoustic kit. The preset kit sounds are superb and very customisable, i got mine in a sale for £500 so im sure with some searching you'd get one in budget. I highly recommend it .

Whilst that Roland kit isn't bad for the money, the pads on them feel nothing like a real drum kit (with the exception of the snare) and I have heard of issues with the pads being unresponsive. If you can find the space for a small acoustic kit, they are a lot more rewarding to play, if you don't like the look of the Yamy, have a look at a 'Premier Artist Heritage Club' or a 'Sonor Force Jungle' instead. If you gig out they also sound just like a full size kit with a bit of EQ. Also it would be more cost effective!

If not have a look at a 'Millennium Transformer' kit, all mesh heads, pretty realistic feel for the money! Good luck with whatever you decide to purchase.
