In a situation like this, where the artist is not some young wannabe desperate for airplay, I think the artist should step up and say to the Beeb (or anyone else) "Play it all or don't play it at all".

Looks like the chances of Patti Smith's song Rock 'n' Roll Nr ever being played on the radio again are zero, as the word is used about a hundred times in that one.

Context is everything.

Although even that article in the Mail says that it's not a policy decision, it was one programme that decided to cut it on that one occasion, and it might not happen again. It's not saying anywhere that it will always be played like that.

In related things, I could never understand why The Jam's "Going Underground" was played with the line "spraying s**t from my TV screen" without being censored, when other songs using the same word had to be re-recorded.

That said, Trevor Nelson seems to have a point - it's usually so obvious what the word they've blanked out actually was that they might as well have left it in.
