Dubstep - grumpy old man content.

I've always had pretty varied musical taste, verging more towards the dance and bass side of the spectrum. DJ Shadow, Little Dragon, Hospital Records, Benny Page, Dub, Raggae, Hip Hop etc.
I just turned 30 and was introduced to Skrillex. Frankly I thought it was the begining of the end. Some music I like, some I don't, but I've never said "it's not music, it's just noise before". Slightly disappointed with myself I searched the genre for something other than one dimensional ste, churning out unimaginative iterations of the same formula . Dub step had nothing to offer me. I'd turned into my dad and just didn't get it.
Then, as I'd given up all hope, I found Planas Beats. Somone will come along and correct me on whatever micro genre this actually is, but that dubstep sound is unmistakeably there, but it's just fresh!

Absolutely loving what he's produced, worth having a dig through all his work. Needs speakers that will drop to get the best out of it. Had to share!

Whilst I dont agree with you on the whole skrillex thing, I have to say, that is amazing. So fresh and different, has a bit of an 80's video game feel to it. Outrun?

if you are doing the old man thing god knows where I am, I don't really hear anything redeeming in that first clip, sounds like 20 seconds repeating over and over. Dubstep just seems to be random fecking about with a sound effects machine, Skillrex just sounds like someone having a fit whilst holding on to one.

Must go, I need to put the tartan rug back on the parcel shelf of the car

Not really, check out people like Burial, Fourtet, Plastician, Skream, Benga, Joe Goddard etc.

Proper original dubstep is quite different from Skrillex and the likes. Personally I prefer the more downtempo 'chillstep' or 'liquid dubstep'.

I have to say I am partial to a bit of dubstep,I prefer some of the remixes to existing songs though.Here is a song by Malaysian singer Yuna remixed by Canadian dubstep group Adventure Club.

i like fourtet a lot and have done for ages, but i wouldn't call them dubstep?

i checked out burial and someone else (forgot who) from this list... but one thing that instantly turns me off is lame cheesy vocals (i.e. mostly any vocals) which seemed to be all over the burial stuff.

No, fair enough Fourtet isnt true dubstep, but a lot of people would struggle to tell the difference and if you like that sort of slow, beat-heavy music then you might like it.

My first love is vocal trance, so a good set of lungs on a record really sits nicely. The great thing about modern music is that there is something for all tastes.

Sounds like we have quite similar tastes, Condi. I'm also into vocal trance but have been quite taken with chillstep. So far have discovered and enjoyed Phaeleh, Killigrew, Synthetic Epiphany and Blackmill.

Blackmill and Phaeleh are great, not heard the other 2 so I'll go and youtube.
