Looking around on ebay at old synths, the DX7's that were defacto in the 80's seem to be cheap (between £150 - £300) and unloved, will they become as popular and valuable again like Minimoogs?

Years ago I bought a Korg MS20 for about £80 and (stupidly) traded with a close fiend for a graphic equaliser a few years later, only to find that MS20's are now worth over £1000!

So i'm wondering if I buy a DX7 now, will I have a future classic or do software emulators do a better job of FM synthesis?

Hmmmm.... They have a cult status, but not sure they will ever be truly collectable, and as such worth big money.

Happy to be proved wrong, as I have a DX7 ii-D in my attic.... Along with a Sequential Circuits Prophet VS..... Now THERE is a classic!!

The DX7 is already a classic in a way - age, cult status, etc., but I don't think it'll ever become collectable as there was so many produced - some 160,000 if I remember correctly. That said, if everyone takes the attitude that they're 'ten a penny' and treats them badly then maybe mint examples will end up becoming rare and valuable. You never know!

So is the software version as good? I guess it's easier to program/control.

Indeed.

I assume it still works.... It has been mothballed in the attic for the best part of 18 years now! As had the DX7.... But an FM synth is more likely to survive hibernation than a prophet!
