When I buy new music I always buy a CD then rip it to iTunes and they are in my iPhones and iPod.
There's something not right about buying an MP3. It's just not physical enough.
Also. My mate had his mac and iPhone nicked and he's lost about 2000 albums. No backup no CD's.
That's about £16k worth of music.

All my CDs have been stuck on those spindles that you buy blank media on with covers etc... in a sealed plastic wallet. Takes up next to no space compared to keeping then in their original cases.

Anything he bought from iTunes or Amazon can just be re-downloaded. Slightly quicker to rectify than claiming on insurance for 2000 CDs.That's about £16k worth of music.

Well, if he has not got the CD's, and he ripped from them, then he hasn't lost anything, as he shouldn't have them in the first place.That's about £16k worth of music.
If he bought them from iTunes, Amazon, etc, then he should still be able to get them.
If they were torrented/obtained illicitly, then he hasn't lost anything either.
I've still got some of those big brief case type cassette boxes in my loft with 150 or so cassettes in. I think the only cassette player we've got is in the Mrs car. It's going the same way with CD's, only drives I've got are on my PC (where I've already got all the music anyway), and in the car (which has an SD card with about 50 albums on), so I never touch my CD's either. Tend to buy electronically from Amazon unless it's something pretty old/obscure on CD from e-bay.

For me it`s about the whole touchy feely bit as in i want a physical product and not some PC file that will be lost once yer p.c has a meltdown. It is all about the inlay booklet the artwork and suchlike...... b ut to be honest i am still old school and it`s vinyl for me DBL gatefold with that cardboard smell about it ( those old enough to know about vinyl will understand )

CD's of anything but the very latest albums tend to be a fraction of the price of legal downloads, especially used, so I'm filling up my back catalogue of classic albums that way.
CD's don't really have the element of tangibility for me, they're a pale imitation of the vinyl I grew up with, so I don't really think of them as better than MP3s in that respect.
I do sometimes download MP3s if they're particularly good value, but mostly I just wait a few months and pick up a bargain basement CD

My home system is spared from crappy low bit rate downloads 99% of the time but I do use them in the cars.
People have become too fixated on having a million tracks while not giving a stuff about sound quality. A real shame.
Of course you can get high bit rate downloads but I bet very few use them.

How many people can actually tell the difference though? You need to have a reasonably decent system to get the benefit, and that's not what most people listen to music on. I listen to music in the car, on my iPod, my PC, or a portable iPod dock/radio in the bedroom. I can't tell the difference between a CD and a reasonable quality MP3/AAC on any of those.

You're not special. I still buy CD's & LP, don't play them often and all CD's are ripped to the computer and played via iTunes. Just prefer spending money on something physical.
Yes they sit in boxes in the loft but they should last forever, computer data is still a bit temporary for me despite lots of backups.
I generally only buy downloads if there is no alternative, don't often buy from iTunes as the music I listen to is generally independent stuff and not available from there.
