AFAIAC, he's the outstanding composer of the 20t century.

Last night I managed to sequence my own version of his theme from the film of Mary Queen of Scots, comparatively simple by his standards (so only fairly difficult for me smile), but hauntingly beautiful.

I'm thinking I might have a go at Walkabout next.

I agree. His score for Out of Africa is sublime.

If you choose your films based on who wrote the music then it is hard to go wrong with a John Barry film.

Maurice Jarre is another worth investing some listening-time in.

smile Including my all time favourite, Dances With Wolves, and I'm especially fond of OHMSS and You Only Live Twice too

Dr Zhivago, Ryan's Daughter and Lawrence of Arabia are the ones that come to mind, I particularly like Tonya's theme from the first one. I expect I will have a go at that some time

And the Hatari theme from Henry Mancini There's something very special about that.

Barry is one of my favourite 20th C composers along with Shore, Glass, and Vaughan-Williams.

Even his one-off compositions, such as The Beyondness Of Things and Lullabying have his signature "epic film score" quality that is unmistakeable.

Of course, his film scores will go down in history as some of the best ever and - IMO - OHMSS, You Only Live Twice, and Midnight Cowboy are copper-bottomed classics.

I just started listening to that, and am highly amused to hear it open with the James Bond theme, which he didn't write. There was a court case about it. First song is From Russia With Love which, of course, he didn't write either! Don't these people do any research?

I'll second Out of Africa.

One of my other favourites is Michael Kamen - Band of Brothers is fantastic.

Had to double take at your user name as I have Cup of Tea Records Compilation with Grantbys Timber on it which samples 007 And Counting/ 007 on it from Diamonds Are Forever as a chillout tune

Very underrated composer. As a child, the Persuaders theme, as much as I liked it, used to haunt me a bit, don't know why. Still remains one of my favorite Barry pieces

I don't know about underrated, he did win 5 oscars...

I do agree that he's not as well known as he should be though.

My particular favourite is the Body Heat theme, although I also like Walkabout (possibly because it conjures up memories of a young Jenny Agutter in the nuddy).

Another I remember from years gone by was on the B-side of the Persuaders Theme single; The Girl With The Sun In Her Hair was used for a Sunsilk commercial. What a waste!
