Let me be the first to say...It's just a guitar. Looks like the modern LP Supreme. No guitar is ever worth that much IMHO. These "Collectors" type specials really annoy me. Bought to be locked away never to be played.

All that, and not a single word about how it plays or what it sounds like, which is, surely, the point of a guitar such as this?

You'd think, being a guitar shop owner and, presumably, a player, that would be the over-riding criteria for spending that amount on a guitar. Sadly it's attitudes like this that perpetuate the myth of rarity being a measure of a guitar's worth.

That 25/50 reissue has been for sale for ages at that price. IMHO it will never sell at that price - too close to Burst era Les Paul values.

The price of rare guitars, like rare cars, is partly based on what they do, but mostly on what they are.

If it was just a guitar, you are right - it's madness. But Bursts stopped being 'just a guitar' about 30 years ago.

A waste? Well, if the guitar market wasn't awash with hundreds of great guitars, I'd agree.

It's off-Ebay marketing: you have to email to find out who, the seller checks you're a likely buyer and not a timewasting tyrekicker, and by this time you do the deal directly, saving the seller a LOT of fees.

£200k is a lot for an LP Custom, even one from '58.

When my dad was in his twenties in the early sixties, his band had some interest & acquired a manager who took them all down to Denmark Street to get new gear. It came down to two guitars & ultimately my dad was swayed by the very now Hofner Veritihin with stereo, yes, stereo outputs.

The other guitar was, you guessed it a 1955 LP Gold Top. The Hofner is upstairs as I type, appreciating at a rate of about three quid a year & must now be worth all of £300-400.

Compared to Stradavarius (sp) Violins ,some of which are 300 years old, and still played live. These boys are far to precious about guitars.
