Mos Def - Black on Both Sides


A defining moment from a man who is in my mind the most talented man to have ever graced hip hop - and he's a great actor to boot. His lyricism and the way he delivered his lines, his lyrical content has always had real substance and the music he produces to rap over is brilliant, these things make him the best to me. He's always been critical of the US government but sadly the whole thing seems to have gone to his head a bit, between converting to Islam and producing anti-government propaganda videos, he should have focused on what he is good at.

One of my all time faves is "Straight From The Basement of Kooley High" by Original Concept. Sadly never released on cd/download but was an absolutely awesome album.

Other standouts for me are:

You have The Chronic?

I weighed up 3 albums before deciding on Wu-Tang Forever; The Chronic and It Takes A Nation of Millions* were the other two. My favourite rap track of all time , Stranded On Death Row, is on the Chronic but the overall quality of Forever won out. It may be a generational thing, but 2001 never featured in my thoughts, st I put Regulate above 2001.

BTW I'm not trying to degenerate your choice, music is a very personal thing. Regulate reminds me of a very care-free era, and Forever of a time where I done some wising up.

*I don't think this is great album per se but it is so sampled in rave, techno, trance, you name it they've sampled it, and that makes it a great album

There's just too many to mention to be honest. Protect Ya Neck is amazing as well as Tears & C.R.E.A.M but theyve much more. I agree regarding how brilliant their lyrics are but what's more impressive is their flow. I think Raekwon, Ghost & GZA have amazing flows.
