Is Rock n Roll dead

Big question, is it no more, is Rock confined to the pages of music history now or will it resurrect itself again. For years now the charts and popular music have been filled with Rap, Hip hop and pop dross with barley a spattering of rock bands and certainly no new ones. Gone seem to be the days of the rock gods and they are now left to fill stadiums full of their old time believers.

Rock dead? Ha. That's funny. It's alive and kicks well my friend.

When i hear some of the glossy dross that passes for music i know that nothing will ever surpass Led Zeppelin for example. Put on 'In My Time Of Dying' and it still sounds contemporary and streets ahead of anything else. Oh the other hand flip on 'We Call It Acid'... enough said.

Rock is timeless, the other stuff is faddy and dates so quickly.

I'm glad to enjoy rock music. Time for a blast, now where's my copy of Funhouse by the Stooges?

No, luckily its just gone out of fashion, so those of us that enjoy it can keep it to ourselves for a while...

The Strypes seem to be doing well at the moment so not quite dead yet.
I must say though as a fifty-something bass player I can see rock musicians becoming like the old highly skilled musicians from my youth who were in denial about the demise of jazz/swing bands.

Thats my concern, the 40+ generation are keeping it alive, below this its becoming very marginal. I see it going the same way as Jazz/Blues, all the greats being old men steadily dying off. Some new/good stuff always coming through but nothing to match the hay-day.

In order to have great rock bands you need lots of kids taking up bass guitars and and kicking the st out of drum kits while feeling the passion, this then produces some truly exceptional groups/talent. As long as the kids aren't playing there are no greats to come out of it

Rock 'n' roll (or any kind of rock music, I'm not sure which this thread is about )will never die!

It will just retain a small but loyal following of people who appreciate genuine musical talent. Let the gullible masses listen to their manufactured dross, as long as people like you and me are still around, the old greats will live on eternally.

Interesting statistic for you, that over a million guitars and basses were sold in 2006, more than double that of 1999, which was coming into the peak of the dance music scene... so the kids are out there playing. With the internet age, music access has diversified so much that there's so much available so easily, also there's no real 'rock' stars as genres are so diluted and spread out now.

Yeah, to be honest, the whole album is very good. Personal favourite is Calm The Fire. Can see that being a brilliant opener for a gig.

there was an article in the times a few weeks back proclaiming the same thing,the article was based on a review of the reading festival highlights on tv ,I await their football reports based on match of the day highlights.
