As opposed to noise reduction.

My wife likes to listen to talking books while at work, which is entirely feasible for what she does, but is concerned that she may miss external noises she needs to hear such as telephones etc. She uses a Sony Walkman at present, with earphones. It has noise reduction which has been turned off

So, can anyone suggest something that would help? One solution that has been tried is open back headphones but that hasn't done the trick. What's needed is something like NR but working in reverse.

That's an interesting idea, and if she was just in one place that's what we would go with thanks, but she has to move about the building quite a bit unfortunately. One senior person is convinced that my wife can't here her talking when she has the earphones in, but has such a quiet voice that my wife can't hear her anyway, and is often having to ask her to speak up even when she hasn't been listening to the book.

I think you are over engineering the solution; remove one of the two earphones?
I presume if on the phone, you need one ear free anyway.

If I were the boss, I'd be saying its work, not story time. wink

It's not quite as simple as that, but thanks for trying.
