Hi all,

My much-loved but ageing bass amp is in need of a repair and service.

It's a mid-eighties GP12SMX 4x10 Combo - not worth more than a few hundred quid nowadays but after playing through it for 25 years its tube-preamp sound is 'my' sound!

It's got an intermittent short (whack it and it stops) and now has a slight distortion at all gain/volume/pre-amp settings.

Any idea who I could trust to do a decent job in London/Herts without getting stiffed?

cheers
Ian

I'll email you with a couple of repair guys in the North London area I use regularly.. Sounds like a dry joint or at worst a simple component on the way out...

Bit further away from you, but contact Roadhouse Repairs via Sounds Plus in Bury St Edmunds. They revalved and serviced my Laney Cub for less than the valves would cost from Watford Valves.

I used to have that exact combo. Got sick of carrying it / lumping into vans!

It's bloody heavy, but it does move some air!
It was even worse when I used to amplify my double bass - way too much kit....
Fortunately/unfortunately I don't gig with it often any more.

North London would be good - I'm based near Finchley.

In parallel I'm trying to track down someone from the old Trace Eliot factory in Essex, got a pal in that neck of woods who knows a few people from way back..

I'm a bit late in replying, but wanted to say a big thanks to chevy-stu for the recommendations - all sorted now.
It was just a couple of dry joints, now the old girl is sounding better than ever.
