I only caught the second half of the Rock Excess programme. It reminded me how indifferent I was and still am to Motley Crue. It was funny how dismissive the programme was of 'grunge'.
Always amusing to be reminded of the Ozzy bat episode. Didn't see whether they mentioned Alice Cooper's similar antics.

The Amps and Whips thing was a bit tedious. All these stories eg Ozzy snorting ants, Motley Crue not washing for 3 months etc are trotted out everytime there is one of these documentaries on, and the stories are told as hearsay, never by the perpetrators. Although that may be because they were out of their heads at the time!
The second half was odd. Thrash metal and Limp Bizkit got a mention without the sordid details so someone wasn't sure about the narrative - as in was this supposed to be about excess or the progression of rock?
I can see why grunge gets criticised as after Kurt's demise it was pretty dark and depressing and the party seemed to be over.

It was always fairly introspective and angst-laden, but a lot of great material was created in a shortish period. Also, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains and Stone Temple Pilots carried on producing good material for a while after Kurt's death. In fact, Pearl Jam have carried on producing good material IMO. Skrambles said:

Soundgardens reunion album was pretty good,and aic's 2 albums with the new front man have been very good (the first one especially) .But Pj rule the roost,probably best band in the world imo.

There have been moments of brilliance from Soundgarden since Superunknown but not enough of them. But Pj rule the roost,probably best band in the world imo.
But Pearl Jam have definitely gone from strength to strength - I've generally found that their albums (including Backspacer) need a few listens to get properly immersed in them but then the albums won't let go. I also rate the Eddie Vedder solo album/soundtrack "Into the Wild". Haven't yet got a copy of Lightning Bolt.
Still love AIC and totally agree about the 2 albums with DuVall. It was a double Sap/Jar of Flies CD that got me into them. Cracking stuff.
