A to Zepellin: the Led Zep Story

A Led Zep documentary was on last night on Sky, featuring lots of interview material with their tour manager, Richard Cole, and others. It was interesting, but disappointing in that no Led Zep music was actually played to break up the interview footage. I heard a rumour a few months back that they were to do a gig at the O2 (a la Rolling Stones): has anyone else heard this and is there anything to it?

Thanks for the tip, I've set it to record later in the week. As far as I am aware there are no plans for another one off gig. Clearly I'd love them to do it though.

It's a great read though. Who knows, there's probably a mixture of truth and myth between Zeppelin and Cole.

MrsKillingjoker has just ordered me the Live at the BBC cd pack, and the original film of The Song Remains the Same. I bloody love Zeppelin i do.

You need the 2003 DVD set and the BluRay of Celebration Day, the 2007 O2 Concert (that I couldn't get tickets for. fk, fk, fk!)

One of my favourite bands. I tried to get O2 tickets back in 2007 but failed. I saw them at Earls Court in 1974 and again at Knebworth in 197-something so perhaps it's best to remember them when they were in their pomp.

Earls Court was 1975 and Knebworth 1979. I was too young for both.

The Celebration Day BluRay shows they still have it, unlike so many other reformed bands, but they were always just better.

I stand corrected. Much of the 70's is a blur so I did well to be only one year out. It was ELP I saw in 74 there, sodding boring for my first gig.

Possibly! Let's just say I had a good time in the 70's and 80's. I managed to get a job on security at Reading Festival from 76 to when it stopped being put on by the Marquee Club in 80-something, so many good memories.

I recommend the 2003 Led Zeppelin twin dvd (no name but it's the one with the sand and mountains on the cover). It's a belter. 320 mins of really good live footage and some real early black & white studio footage as well (so early career wise that Robert has to introduce their names. Amazing).

Yes, that's the 2003 one (I think that's when it came out), The cleaned up old footage is amazingly good.

THe BBC double CD mentioned earlier is essential too. The old recordings are all mono, but still great. There must be three or four versions of Communication Breakdown on that set.

I'll have to get those DVD/BDs. I've got quite a few of the Cds: BBC Sessions, Remasters, I to IV, Physical Graffiti, Houses of the Holy, In through the out door, Presence, Coda. The Celebration Day box set looks good: I'll have to add that to the Xmas list too.

JPJ apparently only watched the 03 DVD when the 07 gig was announced.

Said "I knew we were good - but I didn't know we were THAT good!"

Haha.

They fk up a couple songs during the 07 gig (Page's fault) but their recovery makes it worth while. Having been the drummer in all too many small time bands who've fked up mid pub gig, I know exactly how hard it is to pull it back. To pull their music, in front of x thousands of fans, back... I saw them at Earl's Court in '75, both Knebworth's in '79 and loads of times since Zeppelin split up after Bonzo's death......

Yeah - 26" kick, coated heads (both sides) recorded in a stairwell, with Bonhams hammer of a right foot giving it that extra attack... Not a hard beat to play but hard to capture that sound!
