What gigs did you enjoy that you didn't think you would?

Last Sunday, took my lad to see Avenged Sevenfold. Whilst I like a bit of rock, I wasn't expecting to enjoy the gig but turned out to be one the best I've been to. Utterly brilliant.

Other 'surprisingly good' gigs include Nick Kershaw and Shaking Stevens (I kid you not).

So, who did you see that you liked but didn't expect to..?

I'm taking my Mum to see Andre Rieu at the Arena, Nottingham a week on Friday. Whilst I'm more of a Rock fan, I suspect I actually might like it.

She watches his shows on Sky and has just about all of his CD's etc, and seems to know most of the orchestra by name!

Time will tell.

Travis were a better live act than I expected. Their sound was a bit louder and rockier than the radio edits.

You can hardly hear the lead guitar on the recorded versions, but live he was turned up a notch or two.

This was quite a few years ago now.

Mrs Evil used to be a bit of a Duran Duran fan when they were first out so I took her to see them a few years back, expecting them to be rubbish but they were bloody good. Loud too!

My wife came with me to see Scars on Broadway (Daron and Jon from S.O.A.D) at the astoria a few years back as a mate pulled out last minute, she thought she'd hate it but she bloody loved it! She's not normally into that sort of thing. Was a bloody good gig!

He did an Annie Lennox cover and when the music started I cringed thinking it was going to be awful, it was one of the best covers I have ever heard, and covering her is a brave move.

Years ago, Finsbury Park supertent for the Pogues. Support act walk on to much ridicule from the hardore Pogue fans who could literally rip a bad support to pieces, 2 geeky looking bespectable lads. Oh no they are gonna die I thought.... by the end had us all singing along to "letter from America"

Archie Bronson Outfit at the Cluny in Newcastle. The venue is nice and intimate although the acoustics are not great there. I'd only heard a couple of their tracks and whilst I enjoyed them, I'm not a massive fan so to speak so wasn't expecting much. I think I enjoyed it more for the atmosphere and crowd banter than the music if I'm honest but definately classes as a gig I wasn't sure about but I ended up having a great night.

Limp Bizkit, the the O2 in Glasgow a couple of years ago. I was knackered and dreading it, but they were effing brilliant.

Die Antwoord at the HMV Ritz in Manchester earlier this year. We weren't sure about it but went after watching their videos and thinking it'll at least be interesting. It was, in fact, totally awesome! I've been to a lot of gigs but they were really good.

Olly Murs at the O2

Though it might have been the private VIP box and gallons of red wine that made it good.

That said, Olly's backing band were excellent.
