Hi,

I was thinking (OK, I was drinking at the time, and as a matter of fact, right now too..)that what excatly it is that I am looking for in a classic car?

I think that I am looking for a classic that has the feeling of the Suede´s Dog Man Star. The best idea that I´ve had so far is a pre-H.E. XJ-S..

Any ideas?

A Facel Vega ? Jensen Interceptor ? Can see the appeal of the V12 XJ-S though, it'd have to be dark brown or black without question.

Good ones. As far as the Facel goes, the problem might be "champagne taste, lemonade money". Jensen... I had a hybrid before (de Tomaso Longchamp), and came to a conclusion that for all their charms, a yank v8 with an automatic transmission in an European car does not fullfill my GT man fantasies.

I posted this same question on the "classic Cars" section. First suggestion was a Ferrari 400i (pretty good), the second one consentrated on taking the piss out of the band..

Since it's Suede, Bernard Butler period, it has to be something androgynous that is neither one thing nor the other. Therefore the winner is a Porsche Boxster, you never know if it's coming or going.

Aww, I like Suede & one of the things I like best about them is how after Bernard Butler left, they advertised for a new guitarist & got a letter in reply from 17 year old zero experience Richard Oakes who said I'll play all your hits & write your next album. And he did. And it was great.

Ah yes I'd forgotten about that, which is (was) great.

I thought Bernard Butler was good, just not as good as the hype.

Bernard Butler is very good. Just listen to his solo work.

As for the car, there's only one answer, an original Porsche Speedster, the car James Dean was driving when he crashed and died, which is of course the theme of Daddy's Speeding.

BB's new stuff with Trans is nice.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYermPqGME4

When he went solo after Suede, I blagged a ticket to the A&R launch. 200 music journo's, Alan McGhee DJ'ing, it was a bit of alright. Anyway, BB came on stage with his acoustic, sat down to play & someone's mobile went off. BB swore into the mic & huffed off stage. Came back an hour later, played three songs & disappeared again. Precious soul.

I went to see Suede a few months back. They were very very good. Brett has still got "it" & Oakes is probably technically better than Butler I'd say. The difference was how they approached it...Bernard gave his 355 a proper hiding & had real presence. Richard just stood there. Nowt wrong with that tho.

Saw them waaaay back in 92 or 93 at Sheffield Leadmill & was utterly blown away. Feel lucky to have been there.

Right, back to motors....how's about a '64 Lincoln Continental (the one on a The Matrix??)

Thank you for the comments.

Yes, BB seems a bit precious..

I bought the album when I was living in the States, more precicely in South Carolina, which was certainly an odd place to buy an album with an "ambiguous" cover art (ambiguous, my ass..). It was made by some band called "The London Suede", wonder whatever happened to them?..

In my mind Suede´s music is from the seventies, so no Boxter´s for mme. The Lincoln suggestion is an intresting one, in more ways than one, since I used own a ´66 Continental. A ´66 coupe might work.

Just booked to see Trans next month. BB + band for six quid. You can't go wrong! I'm going to try to persuade him to play Animal Nitrate. What a riff that is. So simple & yet so powerful.

Ideal car would be the Mercedes 420SEC owned by Brett Anderson, was for sale last year IIRC. Have been a massive Suede fan since the early days and DMS is one of my all time favourite albums.

I remember a side note in one of the classic car magazines, when it was for sale ages ago. IIRC, Brett doesn´t have a drivers licence (his dad was a cabbie, and Brett wanted to make sure he´d never be one).

Second thoughts, Suede are all over 70's glam in their sound. I'm going with a 16v Dolly Sprint. Fast, looks good, didn't last.

Harsh. I have one in my garage. And part of it in the attic. And some of it in my wardrobe. And a bit in the shed. biggrin

Wow! I'm a fan of Suede but didn't know that, just that Bernard Butler had left. That's a good story.
