As a guitarist i've sat and watched Hendrix,Jimmy Page,Gary Moore,Stevie Ray Vaughan etc, lots of great moments they had but i have to post this clip again as i've never seen a guitarist play a solo that just seemed so inspirational that it just doesn't seem to come from the guitar but from him?,it just seems every little thing in his head just comes right through his hands, unbelievable,i don't really know why this solo impresses me so much,'nothing' i have seen seems so impressive and natural,i didn't even know of this guitarist but i had heard of the band Chicago.Just discovered this clip lately.Solo starts at 2.59 if that's all you want to hear.Like the way the song starts up as well though.Really tragic the way his life ended too, terrible!

I'm going to agree with you on this, that really is an amazing bit of work, he nails everything there, it does seem to just pour out of him.
If I had one criticism, he doesn't use his little finger for fretting enough but it hardly matters!

However, without knowing anything about this bloke I would take a wild guess that drugs are involved here. The effect of good gear can't be under estimated, watch SRV, he's off his tits most of the time and it shows, constant flat out playing with everything falling into place.
Obviously drugs are a bad thing but with a wheelbarrow load of decent coke coursing through your veins you will play above your normal level. Up to a point of course. Once the gear becomes more important than the performance then everything will go to st.

It's not a popular stance but the fact is an awful lot of the greatest music played is chemically enhanced. That's not to say that superb music hasn't been made clean, of course it has, but lots of creativity has been boosted with substances.

Didn't do anything for me. I don't really think it was overly soulful or fluent.

Perhaps I'm used to Ritchie Blackmore's style which just oozes effortless passion and punch live!

Music, like comedy, is a very personal thing, and it's rare to get 100% consensus.

Have to agree with you on this though. You can hear far better in many pub bands across the land, any night of the week. Probably why Terry Cath is rarely mentioned in 'best guitarist' polls.

At first I though the OP might have been overly enthusiastic on a Friday night after some jolly juice, but it was posted Wednesday so I suppose he must just really, really like it....

Well, it certainly sounded like he was "feeling the moment", but his limited musical vocabulary meant for all the passion, there wasn't really anything articulate to say.

It doesn't automatically follow that you should play all of those notes just because you can.

Interesting comments.
Music is of course in the ear of the beholder, I don't particularly like Chicago and I hadn't even heard of this bloke before this thread, I understand completely that people may not be impressed by this.

But seriously, while you may prefer what pub bands play across this land Ade, as someone who plays guitar I can promise you that very few guitarists could pull off this solo. It's fine to be underwhelmed by it, different strokes and all that, but intimating that this bloke can't play is preposterous, he is technically fking amazing, cocaine or not that solo is stunningly accomplished.

Maybe he was trying it out for a prospective purchase, and had to to check every note on the fretboard?

At no point did I intimate that he can't play, just that he is, at best, little more than average, and I stand by that opinion. I also play guitar, and am fairly confident I could pull that off with a little practice. I know that's not the same as either composing or improvising an original piece, but then I'm only a 'bedroom' guitarist. I know many guitarists who would, in an 'axe-off' (made-up phrase!) make Terry Cath* want to shoot himself. shoot

Dude come on, you must be joking if you think that in any way was a tricky solo, either in terms of its composition, feel or its technique.

I've heard kids of 15-16, say grade 5, do better stuff.

Its cool if you love the dude, but you just sound a bit nave.

Agree to disagree then, and I don't love the dude, as I said above I'd never even heard of him. I still think it's a brilliant solo, we can all play some of that some of the time but to pull it off straight through is going some.
